Yes, certain Filipino groups used to tattoo themselves. The Visayans, especially, used to tattoo themselves from head to ankle to the point that the Spaniards used to call them pintados. The Tagalogs really weren't. So it's not really right to say that ALL Filipinos did it, just certain ethnic groups.
If you're thinking of getting a tattoo of these, I would suggest really researching it if you care about the meaning to you. If not, then go all out.

I was going through their site again. I'm curious about the map they have on their page, they pointed out specific places & wondering what sources they've used that may have pinpointed those exact places.
The whole "wave" thing though, that bothers me like a sore thumb.
