jwz just posted on this eccentric character from early San Francisco, the King of Pain.

One link led to another and now I am obsessed with the actress and performer Lotta Crabtree, "The San Francisco Favorite" of the 1850s-70s. Why favorite? I think this picture says it all.

I wouldn't have picked that (it's a little, er, a LOT, too butch for me) but I see the appeal.

By the way, did you look at her biography? She was refused entrance into a ladies' society because she wouldn't give up the cigars, and never married, blaming her performance schedule. I guess it's too bad she just never met the right guy. ;)
