sign-off

I started this journal on New Year's in 2002, so my renewal notice always comes up around this time. I just declined. I won't be posting here any further, and I may even go as far as removing all the content soon.

I'm using LJ Migrate to back up the content, and some of the better stuff may make it to my personal website someday. I'm not ( Read more... )

Aw, poop. Why are you leaving, if you don't mind my asking? I'll miss seeing your posts here.

I signed up for LJ in early 2002, too. Crazy how time flies.

I haven't been happy with LiveJournal as a company for a long time. I'm not posting much. Most friends aren't posting much either, except for you and a handful of others.

It's just long overdue. I'm the sort of person that prefers to tear things down to make room for something new.

EDIT: Oh, and thanks.. but also, please don't take it as any sign that I want to sever any existing relationships.

Not to worry, I didn't take it as such.

I myself am saddened to see people leaving LJ in droves. Over the years, I've built up such an amazing community of people around myself via LJ -- both IRL and internet-only. I can't imagine life without it. Fortunately it seems like most of the people leaving (or at least, those announcing that they're leaving) are people I know IRL -- so it's not like I'll lose touch entirely.

Oh! I wish this were not true, I want LJ to come back to life, it was better when it had more active writers. Twitter feels like table scraps.

"For those of you who are still posting on LJ, I will try to follow via RSS and so on, but it will be very sporadic."

If I may do a little bit of self-promotion here, you may want to peek at LJProxy if you have not done so already. It lets you get at friend-protected LJ entries in your RSS reader of choice (specifically targeting Google Reader). These days, that is the main interaction I have with LiveJournal. I only ever hit up the site to leave the occasional comment.

I don't blame you for wanting to leave LiveJournal. I did the same a few years ago. At the time, I used Wordpress' LJ import functionality to pull in entries, but comments and userpics were left behind. I had never seen LJ Migrate before, but may now run that just for kicks to see if I can do anything fun or useful with the backup. Maybe I'll write a little script to import the comments tied to the previously-imported blog posts.

Thanks, that's useful.

I have this irrational fear of Wordpress. It would be super easy to set up, but it seems like they get hit with security problems every month.

Wordpress is just like any other internet-connected application or operating system. All the security problems a few months ago and a few months before that were due to people running old versions. For about the past 6 months Wordpress has had an auto-update mechanism for the core application and plugins. It seriously makes upgrading into a two-click operation that Grandma can do. No tarballs or file transfers. But people either weren't performing the auto-updates or were still running an older version predating the auto-update. A few high-profile sites got hit (e.g. Scoble) and suddenly "Wordpress isn't secure ( ... )
