Question: How do you remember things when you keep forgetting things all the time?

Dear LiveJournal,

I have Attention Deficit Disorder. I have an amazing ability to genuinely forget important things in situations that would otherwise appear "convenient" to the average person.

Q: How can I remember things when I usually keep forgetting them?

Take this example: my wife ixchelmala  is a little annoyed with me because I used a rather expensive ( Read more... )

Being a fellow ADHD person, I know how this can get.

I have to do little tricks to remind me. For things that I need to do, I have a white board I keep in my bathroom with notes on it - I usually remember things while I'm in there (shower or otherwise) and it's easy to jot down. Right now I have some prescriptions I need to get filled, a story idea, a coupon for Coffee Bean stuck to it, and a reminder to do my weekly weigh-in on Wednesday.

If I'm not supposed to use something, I put a sticky note on it. "DO NOT EAT - C.CHIPS for PANCAKES!!" That way I'm not tempted to break into them.

I keep a thick pad of sticky notes (long, list-style, magnetized) on the fridge. I use it for my grocery list, of course, but also to make notes to myself of things I need to do. Sometimes I have to stick these on the door so I'll see them on the way out (or so that my roommate will see and remember to do the dishes before she goes to work, for example).

edit: I should add that Ix could also help by putting notes on things, too. If you ask about ( ... )

But I couldn't resist the temptation to reply, and I don't have an LJ. This is Deirdre. Hi!!! *waves* Since I know your lovely wife pretty well, I cannot resist an alternate perspective, although this is not an answer to your question. ;-)

Although AFAIK he does not have ADHD, Bob does this sort of thing from time to time...in fact, I think most humans do. In 13+ years I have learned to laugh and roll with it, and to say hmmm, obviously the universe does not want me to have carrot soup in my life right now, the universe wants me to have cashew butter. Which is, truth be told, pretty darn yummy stuff. (Unless you ate all the cashew butter yourself, in which case that's a slightly different problem.) I would posit that you, and your ADHD, are a beautiful agent of chaos, come to sprinkle a little fairy dust in Herself's well-ordered world.

Actually, that's probably pretty mutual, isn't it. :-)
