I'm pretty sure that the laws were instated to protect the economy and creators of pieces of art and design. In our money-driven world, we'd have a lot less music if we didn't make sure that the artists got the credit, and money, that belonged to them. I tried to remember what you mentioned last night as an alternative to the RIAA, but couldn't, so thanks for posting the Creative Commons.
I think it's wrong that people can be persecuted for downloading music not available in stores locally when they are not able to buy it offline. Some of the obscure groups I listen to don't have CDs in music stores, but only deal with online sales, making it hard for me to get music without using a debit card.
