I wouldn't worry too much about the whole world knowing who you like. The people who found out are good people and they wouldn't tell your secret. Anyway, you found out who one of those people liked, so you might be able to think of it as an fair exchange of information.
Oh and John Mayer isn't all self-pity, he has some upbeat stuff too...at least I think he does...ponders...yeah, Bigger Than My Body is upbeat...unless I interpreted it the wrong way...oh well.
