"Your friend is a bastard."

Hyunseung looks up from the book he has sprawled in front of him on the kitchen table. Doojoon is standing in the doorway, his hair sticking out on one side of his head. Hyunseung looks him over carefully, trying to understand just what he's talking about. His best friend's clothes aren't in any better condition than the rest of his appearance, and he really can't figure out who he's talking about.

"Junhyung?"

"No, the other one. The cock-tease."

"I only have one bastard friend," Hyunseung informs him, confusion obvious in his voice.

"Yoseob," Doojoon nearly yells, taking a step into the kitchen and closer to his roommate.

"Yoseob? He's totally innocent."

"Right. Tell that to my serious case of blue balls."

Hyunseung simply stares at his friend. He hadn't expected that.

"He's all over me, right?" Doojoon starts, moving over to the sink to get himself a glass of water. "Feeling me up, buying me drinks. Next thing I know, I wake up on the trunk of my car with my pants around my ankles, completely exposed to the world, and there are little girls staring at me." He pauses for effect, but it really only causes Hyunseung to nearly break out laughing. "That bastard worked me up, knocked me out and left me to get arrested."

"You were arrested?" Hyunseung asks, all humor lost as he jumps up from the table in concern.

"No," Doojoon answers quickly, then sets his glass down on the counter. "Luckily none of those girls were with their parents, or I probably would have woken up in a god-damn cell."

Hyunseung relaxes visibly, then slides back into his seat. "Maybe he didn't just leave you there. Maybe you did it."

"Right. I sat up on my trunk, pulled down my pants and passed out. That's just stupid. Why would I do that?"

"Why would you try to sleep with Yoseob when you just met him?" Hyunseung asks before he could stop himself. A short, awkward silence follows the question before he clears his throat and turns to the next page in his book. "Look, I don't know. Yoseob doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would so something like that."

"But he did."

Hyunseung sighs, trying to turn his attention back to his book before Doojoon pulls the chair out from beside him and joins him at the table. "Look, I'm sorry, Seung, but your friend is an asshole and I don't like him."

"You'd like Junhyung less."

"What's up with you and him, anyway?" Doojoon asks before taking another sip of his water.

"There's nothing 'up' with us."

"But you're over there all the time."

"I told you last night," Hyunseung starts, moving a hand to close his book when he realizes he's not going to get anywhere with it as long as his best friend is there. "We're not dating. We're just friends. Nothing at all is going on."

Doojoon is quiet for a while, so long that Hyunseung debates opening his book again. "That's a shame."

"What?"

"You never date anyone. As long as I've known you, the closest you've been to actually dating someone was the blind date I set you up with."

"It was one of your exes," Hyunseung points out bitterly. The whole situation had been awful and he didn't like to think about it, let alone talk about it.

"She was hot."

"She was also female," Hyunseung adds, his voice lowering significantly.

"Yeah, okay, I'm sorry about that," Doojoon apologizes with a laugh, leaning back in his seat comfortably. "But in my defense, you never told me you were gay."

"It's not exactly something I could have brought up while we were hanging out. That could ruin any mood."

"But I don't care that you're gay."

"I didn't know that, did I?"

"Alright, fine, we both suck," Doojoon laughs again, then stands from the table to bring his glass to the sink. "Don't change the subject. You and Junhyung."

"There is no me and Junhyung," Hyunseung replies with a sigh. He wants Doojoon to drop it. Talking about another guy with the one he's actually in love with is kind of painful. Besides, it's all completely ridiculous. He couldn't stand more than a few hours of Junhyung at a time.

"Are you sure?"

"How could someone be confused about something like that?"

"Well, what does he think?"

"He doesn't think anything," Hyunseung nearly yells, pushing himself up from the table, as well, and moving out into the living room. He was telling Doojoon that the conversation is over without actually saying it. He was beyond tired of talking about Junhyung.

But Doojoon follows him into the living room, a small grin on his face. He waits until Hyunseung is settled on the couch and flipping through channels on the TV before he speaks again. "You have a crush on him, don't you?"

Hyunseung turns his head quickly, glaring at his best friend in a way that the other knows it's time to drop the subject. Instead, Doojoon moves to join him on the couch. They sit in silence for a long while, almost watching a program completely in full quiet until one of them starts commenting on the guests on the show and it's minutes before they're laughing and joking and pushing like they usually are with each other. Hyunseung is relieved. He hates when there's tension between them.

But Doojoon has to go to work, so their fun is cut short so he can wash up and head out.

Hyunseung waits a full minute after he leaves before he storms over to Junhyung's apartment. He doesn't even bother putting on shoes. He slams on the door with a clenched fist, making sure he's loud enough for Junhyung to hear that he's there, no matter what the other is doing.

Moments later, the door opens to his neighbor's unsettling smile. "I knew it. You can't resist me."

"Is it true?" Hyunseung asks, completely ignoring Junhyung's attempt at teasing him.

Junhyung's smile falters when he sees how angry his neighbor is. He steps back, opening the door fully to allow Hyunseung in, but the other man doesn't move from just outside the doorway.

"Is it true," Hyunseung repeats, this time sounding less like a question and more like a demand.

"Come inside."

"I don't want to come inside."

"I'm not talking to you out there. Come inside. I'll tell you everything you want to know."

Hyunseung doesn't hesitate before stepping into the apartment far enough that Junhyung can close the door. "Alright," Junhyung starts, then sighs. "What's wrong?"

"What's wrong?" Hyunseung mirrors, his voice raising. "You knew what Yoseob was going to do to him, didn't you?"

Junhyung doesn't respond at first, simply looking his neighbor over as he thinks. "We may have talked about it."

"You really are a bastard," Hyunseung spits out, moving back toward the door, only to have Junhyung move into his way.

"Why are you so upset?"

"Because he could have been arrested. Because he never did anything to you or Yoseob. Because he doesn't deserve that."

"Hyunseung," Junhyung addresses him firmly, calm despite how riled up the other is. "We're your friends. We're trying to help you."

"Doojoon is my friend, too! And friends don't do this to each other!"

Junhyung isn't sure what to say, but he doesn't move from his position between Hyunseung and the door. He's surprised by how upset his friend is, and even more surprised that he was yelling.

"How is hurting him like that supposed to help me?"

"Because he's a jerk. And maybe if people stop acting like what he's doing is okay, he'll see that he needs to knock it off."

"Why do you even care about what he does?"

"Because you love him," Junhyung answers, as though it was always obvious. "Because you deserve to be happy."

Hyunseung doesn't even bother to respond to that, choosing instead to just leave. He pushes past Junhyung, who doesn't stop him, and jerks the door open. He's one step through the door before Junhyung's grip on his wrist pulls him back. He hears the door slam shut as he's pushed into the living room and toward the couch.

"I'll call Yoseob. It was his idea. You can take this out on him."

Hyunseung folds his arms over his chest defiantly, watching the younger man as he moves around the room to find his phone, then dials his friend's number. A short exchange of words later, it's decided that he'll be joining them, despite Yoseob's hangover, which, if Junhyung's half of the conversation was anything to go by, was the wost one he's ever experienced. Hyunseung can't help but grin to himself.

"Are you thirsty?" Junhyung's voice breaks through his thoughts.

"No."

"Sit. I'll get you some water."

"I said I wasn't thirsty."

"I know that. I can hear. But I also know that you like to fidget with things when you're embarrassed or nervous and I have a feeling that you're going to feel a lot of that once he gets here."

Hyunseung sits down on the couch slowly, his gaze moving to his neighbor. How can Junhyung possibly know something like that? Seconds later, he has a cold bottle of water in his hands and he is, indeed, fidgeting with it. He has to give Junhyung credit for that.

"If it means anything to you, I'm sorry we didn't talk to you first. I just thought you'd freak out."

"I'm freaking out now."

"I see that. I don't think I've ever heard you yell until today." Junhyung laughs quietly, taking a seat on the couch beside Hyunseung once he's certain that the other won't try to maul him. "Don't worry. I won't tell anyone that you have emotions."

"Junhyung, please. Don't. I'm not in the mood."

"You're never in the mood. But I'm a bastard, anyway."

"Sometimes I wonder why I keep coming over here. If I had known you were the king of bastards, I would have punched you in the hall that day."

"Why are you in love with him?" Junhyung asks, changing the subject completely.

Hyunseung lowers his gaze to the bottle in his hands. He can just deny it again, but it occurs to him that it was already brought up, and not in Junhyung's typical teasing sort of way. Junhyung knows that he's in love with Doojoon and no amount of denying it is going to convince him otherwise.

"What does it matter?" Hyunseung replies at length without looking up.

"You have to be seeing something in him that the rest of the world doesn't."

Hyunseung looks up at that, his eyes sad. This isn't normal. Usually people are all over Doojoon, but Junhyung isn't like everyone else. "He's a good person. All you see is the people he brings home."

"But he hurts you."

"He doesn't know."

"So tell him."

"He's never going to know. I'm okay with things how they are now."

It's Junhyung's turn to sigh as he leans back further into the cushions of his couch. Emotions are complicated. He doesn't like it.

"He doesn't hurt me. I'm glad that he's happy."

Junhyung doesn't respond. He's already tired of talking about The Jerk. He kind of wishes he hadn't brought it up at all. The only thing worse than Hyunseung talking about him is Hyunseung trying to convince them both that The Jerk is a good person.

Hyunseung stops talking, too. Junhyung isn't the most vocal person he's ever met, but there's no point in having a one-sided conversation. The silence between them isn't comfortable, but neither is willing to fix it. They're both equally as stubborn that way, and neither of them want to argue. Hyunseung has most of the label on his bottle of water peeled off and in a pile on his lap before Junhyung feels the need to turn on the TV to get some noise circulating in the room. What program is on doesn't matter, just as long as the only noise in the room isn't the clock above the front door.

"I'm not telling you how you should feel," Junhyung finally speaks up. "I'm just saying that you deserve better than this."

Hyunseung simply nods, his eyes never leaving the bottle in his hands.

"And I don't care if you keep lying to yourself, or if you never say anything about it again, but don't lie to me," Junhyung continues, turning his head to look over at his friend. "I hate liars."

Hyunseung nods again, finally looking up from his distraction to meet Junhyung's gaze. "Okay."

"Okay."

When Yoseob arrives, Hyunseung doesn't even bother getting angry with him. The three of them squeeze together on the couch and try to find the worst programs on television to make fun of and laugh at. They discover a few that they actually plan to watch again in the future, too. By the time Doojoon can be heard coming home, Hyunseung and Yoseob are already passed out in a pile and Junhyung doesn't have it in him to wake either of them up.
