It was, as the title suggests, unavoidable. I was on the expressway going 60 mph (96kph) in end-of-workday traffic. So there was no changing lanes and no braking for birds.

I knew you would ask. It was some kind of black bird. Small, all black. I didn't see any wing markings because it would flap them to FLY THE HELL OUTTA THE WAY.
The first time I hit a bird was in Montana and it flew up from the ditch right into the underside of the bumper. I think it was a suicide. I cried when I got to Meagan's. She was slightly dumbfounded that I was crying for a bird, but consoled me anyway.
Well, if it was all black (including beak) it was probably a common grackle. They're a dime a dozen, if that's any comfort. You took out one of the least smart ones - Darwin and all that jazz...
If it had a yellow beak and a short tail, it was a European starling and you shouldn't feel at all bad because they were brought over from Europe way back and are an invasive species.

Anyway it reminds of a time a squirrel jumped straight at my car, bounced off the window and died. ...it jumped at my car (from the side) but I still felt bad. D8
