SO bored the entire weekend. dont have. i have had favourite songs (trademark's only love when i was in ~p4 and rem's imitation of life when i was in ~s2) but now there are just too many good songs around that a selection is impossible. and the problem of choice is further complicated by...changing factors. i figured that your prevailing mood/thoughts and number of times you have listened/looped the song (some songs sound better the second time) are large factors. if you try to 'average' everything out (which is unfair as all samplings differ), i still need a list to choose from (and i dont have one) because i cant recall the titles of all songs i once liked and ideally you can only pick the best after you have weighed the best with all other plausible alternatives. but if you asked me at the top of my head what songs i think i like the most now, they are probably billy joel's piano man and u2's kite.

hmm that's true, your 'current' mood may be the most important factor when you're trying to think of a most suitable song now. But sometimes i find that a certain song will suit my mood most of the times. i guess perhaps i should modify my point to: the whole list of songs a person commonly listens to, reflects the person's emotional state of mind, at least for now ( ... )

LOL especially the lines in the chorus of Backstreet Boys' "Shape of My Heart": "Looking back at the things I've done, I was trying to be someone" :P

HAHA the 'no. of times you've looped the song' test for favourites doesn't work on me, for obvious reasons...

Um. Off the top of my head, As Lovers Go by Dashboard Confessional.

(I realised I never asked you what your musical taste is like, QT. Oldies?)

Oh maaan. I've gone through the "identity" thing with a lot of songs. Music gives me catharsis. Many times I'd fall in love with a song because it helps me with I'm going through. It's like inviting the song to be the soundtrack of my life for a while. Stuff that I've gone through this way include Arcade Fire's Rebellion (Lies), The Delgados' The Light Before We Land, Radiohead's Subterranean Homesick Alien, Bright Eyes' We're Nowhere And It's Now, Jonathan Coulton's Mandelbrot Set ( ... )
