Instead of destroying the machine, I really wanted them all to have to sacrifice themselves to the machine, thus making each part of the scientist's soul whole again, and thus not only saving the machine originally but also making it able to start rebuilding the world. As it is, yes, they freed the bits of the scientist's soul -- their friends -- from the machine, but now there's four of them sittin' 'round a post-apocalyptic world, unable to fix it in any way.

EXACTLY. Except I wanted 9 to realize that the only way to fix the world (ehhhh...) was for them all to get sucked in, and for him to also realize that the others would never consent to this. So 1 by 1, he to betrays them all, then after all that, lets himself be taken too. I understand that this would make Children's Movie With Cool, Creepy Imagery into GODDAMN DARK Children's Movie With Cool, Creepy Imagery And Horrifyingly Positive Depictions of Betrayal, but at the end of the movie, I'd respect the writer a bit more.
Also, would have been awesome if the machine started acting differently with each soul it sucked up.
Also, thought for a little while that the movie was going to end with Judy Garland singing "Over the Rainbow" and all of them watching in horror and slow-mo as the Machine chases 5 down, then cutting to black. That would have made it the most awesome and depressing end in the history of everything ever, as well as being pretty boss. Again, awesome for a movie, Very Thematically Inappropriate for a Children's movie.
Think that's it for my 9-tique.
