Part of me is just delighted that El gets to be wrong and stupid and sharp-edged and not perfect. I like that she gets to have flaws, and screw up because she's hurt and scared.Yes! This, exactly. El, in fanfic and on the show, often ends up being this perfect paragon of understanding wifely considerateness, and as much as I appreciate that the show hasn't gone to the opposite extreme of making her a jealous, controlling shrew, I really love that she got to join the boys' Really Stupid Ideas Club in this episode. *g* Because, yeah - Neal and Peter and Mozzie all do dumb, inconsiderate, hurtful things to their loved ones (generally by accident and/or with the best of intentions) and now El's doing it, too. She's always had that ruthless streak in her -- we've seen it before -- so it's not like it's coming out of nowhere

I like that they all get a turn to screw things up, and do the wrong things for the right reasons. And my headcanon version of El and how she relates to Neal has always been a lot harder-edged than how they're usually written in fic. (IMO she's the only character on the show who trusts Neal more than she loves him. Which makes for a fascinating dynamic, but it's not a warm and fuzzy relationship.) It feels like a very realistic and in character mistake for her to make, as I see her

I felt El was very mis-characterized here, and she wasn't the only one. Though for the others, I really have a hard time explaining why they felt so off (besides Mozzie, of course

I'm ... not entirely sure it's all about blaming Neal. In the first scene at the hospital I think she blames him, but that's an immediate and understandable emotional reaction. But I think once that immediate reaction is over she doesn't still blame him. It's less about who's at fault and more about the fact that Peter's involvement in this situation is putting him in (in her opinion) an unacceptable level of danger, and so she wants Neal to do whatever it takes - including lying to Peter if necessary - to reduce that danger.
I don't necessarily agree with her logic - I agree that keeping him away from the key side of the investigation while he's still going after Pratt isn't going to shield him very much - but I can see her deciding that any little bit of protection is better than none, and at least with the Pratt investigation he has some FBI backup since that one isn't completely off-book.
That's an interesting observation and I like it a lot! It explains a lot how El behaved, on the other hand they could build it differently... well I do hope they will resolve it, or at least that El will come clean...
Oh, I hope it gets resolved, too! And I'm sure El will tell Peter what's going on eventually. But still, I like that she gets to be sympathetic and wrong at the same time - it makes her interesting and human.
Just getting round to reading everyone's episode reactions :)
I just hope the writers are going to actually deal with the fallout from all this Yes, me tooo. I think it could be really interesting to have the trust issues between Peter and El for once, and for them to have to overcome something more than an argument about dry cleaning! I'm nervous that this will not be really addressed though.
I totally agree about it being good to see El being not perfect too - I adore her, but she has been too flawless so far! That said, I wish they'd found a different way to do it, because the whole stay-away-from-the-key thing makes zero sense. Also... I want Neal and El to hug now :(
I really hope we do get to see Neal and El hug, eventually. After all this tension I need a good, fluffy, happy reconciliation scene ...
I do like the idea of Peter and El's marriage, and El herself not being perfect. I agree that trying to keep Peter away from the key makes no sense, but I can see El convincing herself it's safer, maybe.
"Because here's the thing about Neal and El - she trusts him. I think she's the only character who does, completely. She trusts him more than she loves him (which is the opposite of every other character on the show)"
