21st century trans girl pre-serum Steve, for my MCU college AU if I ever get around to writing it.
Sarah Rogers is her mom, Joseph Rogers is her dad. Freddie (Winifred) Barnes is Bucky's mom.
Sometimes Steph gets called a social justice warrior, but she's honestly not sure if she qualifies - not that she doesn't fight for social justice, but she's never called anything problematic in her life. Steph still has her own issues with internalized categorism, although she doesn't take it out on other people like herself. Bucky has no brothers, so when they were preteens Steph wound up inheriting a lot of his outgrown but still in good condition clothes. Mostly, she goes by Steph, but a few people close to her - mostly Bucky and her mom - call her Stevie. She does a webcomic about magical girls in World War II.
Joseph Rogers was a veteran of the first Gulf War. Despite her rather miserable performance in most sports as a child (when she was medically cleared to participate at all), Steph's a baseball fan. Her dad had Gulf War Syndrome, and in his more self-deprecating moments he blamed Steph's health problems on GWS-related genetic damage. Steph can be a real little pill when her blood sugar gets low. Sarah Rogers and Freddie Barnes are good friends.
Stevie and Bucky became friends in grade school, after Bucky told off a couple of kids who were picking on her for her Wonder Woman backpack. Sarah Rogers was a feminist and didn't believe in forcing children into strict gender roles, which saved Stevie a lot of grief as a child. One of the reasons Steph doubts her social justice warrior qualifications is that she's really not certain she understands appropriation properly. She's not a car freak, but she is a big fan of classic motorcycles. Steph has a tumblr.
The first few months after she started HRT, Steph was metaphorically holding her breath waiting for he body to have some horrible reaction to estrogen. When she was a teenager, Steph had some issues with scrupulosity (both religiously and social justice related), which has left her some lingering wariness around unreasonable standards of perfectionism in any context. This does not mean that she lets herself off the hook when it comes to doing the right thing - she just tries not to drive herself crazy over the details of every little thing in the process. Sometimes when Steph looks back on her mid-adolescent self, she wonders how Bucky put up with her. Steph wishes there were more body-positivity songs for/about flat-chested girls.
Steph learned ASL as a child. She knows that you can't reasonably blame people for their illnesses or trauma, but part of her sometimes resents her dad just a little for not handling his issues better. Autumn is the season she usually feels best - extreme heat and cold aggravate her asthma, and spring's full of pollen. Sometimes she wonders if her dad would have been better able to deal with his other problems if he hadn't had to worry about Stevie being sick all the time. Not all of her tendency to push herself too hard is rooted in internalized ableism, stubborn pride, or a paladin complex.
Steph does not want to be the person who's so wrapped up in their own pain that they forget their obligations to other people. She's frenemies with Raven Darkholme. Bucky taught Steph to play pool, with rather more success than his attempts to teach her to dance. If real women have curves, what the hell is Steph? All she wants is some nutritional advice that doesn't assume she's trying to lose weight or can afford to eat quinoa and out of season organic fruit every day.
Sarah Rogers knows the difference between respect and deference, and she made sure her child does as well. One thing Steph has been immensely grateful for - Sarah never proposed "be less conspicuously yourself" as a solution to her bully issues. In middle school, a few school officials wanted to have Stevie evaluated for Oppositional-Defiant Disorder - Sarah was rather skeptical. Fortunately, the shrink involved knew the difference between a behavioral disorder and just having opinions. Stevie did get sent to social skills classes for a while, but they didn't do much to teach her to keep her mouth shut.
Her image of herself is closer to Karkat Vantas than Carrot Ironfoundersson. Lazy cynicism in the name of realism ticks her off so badly. If you want to reduce Steph to a hilarious sputtering mess, bring up Frank Miller's (alleged) adaptation of "The Spirit." She's a western animation nerd, but didn't really get into anime until Sam Wilson invited her over for a Miyazaki marathon. Steph identifies as bi, but sometimes wonders if biromantic demisexual might be more accurate.
Steph doesn't drink much - this has more to do with being a lightweight with a sensitive stomach than her alcoholic dad. Between Steph's dad dying when she was a kid, her mom's battle with cancer (now in remission) when Steph was a teenager, and Bucky losing his arm, Steph's become rather nervous about the safety of people close to her. This hasn't made her more cautious with herself. She showers in the evening to give her hair time to dry before she has to go anywhere. Whatever modern medical science says, Steph can catch a cold from running around with wet hair.
When she was growing up, Steph wasn't allowed to have a cat because of her asthma. Then she found out that she was not, in fact, allergic to cats. But she does react badly to heat, humidity, dry cold, smoke, grass pollen, mildew, and overly strong room freshener spray, so perhaps one can't blame her mom for being cautious. Wrangling with student disability services is often frustrating for Steph because she has her asthma and other specific health problems pretty well controlled - it's her "hospitable" immune system that loses her the most class time. She prefers to avoid hospitals as much as possible because they're full of germs.
Sarah Rogers dated a little after Joseph died, but she hasn't remarried or had any long-term partners. Mulan is Steph's favorite Disney heroine. She prefers diesel punk to steampunk. Her love of Wonder Woman has not abated since grade school. While Steph can swim, she's not great at it because she doesn't have much buoyancy and she gets cold easily.
Since she's from Brooklyn and she likes some old-fashioned things, Steph understands why people call her a hipster. But Steph's not certain if she really counts as one since she only likes things sincerely. Her taste in music is pretty eclectic, but she didn't know much about classic r&b before she met Sam Wilson. Steph's preparation for the hypothetical zombie apocalypse involves making a map of all the local vacant lots and weed patches that have stands of nightshade. She's not planning on poisoning anyone, she just wants access to atropine.
Steph's eyelashes are her favorite physical features. Despite her abundance of other health issues, Steph has never had any major dental problems - she doesn't even get many cavities. She's more of a tea drinker than a coffee drinker - she likes the taste of coffee, but it tends to upset her stomach. Spiced cider is better than pumpkin spice lattes. For a while, Steph didn't feel right about self-identifying as chronically ill, since she didn't think a handful of manageable long-term issues plus a crappy immune system really counted the way something like chronic fatigue or fibro does.
Steph eats a lot of lentils - they're cheap and a good source of iron. It's complicated, being a tiny disabled feminist with Action Girl aspirations - in principle, she believes that kinds of strength that don't have anything to do with physical power are important and need to be celebrated, but in the back of her id, Steph just wants to run around ninjaing neo-Nazis in the face. Her slackass immune system is kind of selective in its dysfunction - Steph can catch a cold if someone on TV sneezes, practically, but she doesn't have more trouble with infected cuts or food poisoning than most people. But that may just be because she's more careful. CeCe McDonald's case resonated a lot with her.
She knows she should be grateful she's petite enough that it's fairly easy to find women's clothes in her size, but sometimes she wishes she was a little taller and stronger and generally more Xenaish. Steph knows how to knit. Any public figure who wants to use "Born In The USA" as their theme song should be required to read through the goddamn lyrics first! It makes no sense, but Steph's starting to wonder if Ayn Rand might be an asthma trigger. Arguing doesn't normally set off her asthma, even if it involves people she finds far more abhorrent than Objectivists, but on three separate occasions she had to get out her inhaler after someone brought up Atlas Shrugged.
Yes, Steph knows about food sensitivities and has already explored the possibility that she might have a few, please shut up about how a diet of grass-fed steak and raw squash or whatever will cure her asthma. She once got in a scuffle behind the Humanities building with someone who insisted that Lolita was about a weak man corrupted by a preteen seductress. Steph has no formal pharmacology training, but she knows a lot about OTC painkillers, cold and flu remedies, and supplements that are supposed to be good for respiratory health or immune boosting. If you know what's good for you, do not tell Steph that her touchy stomach is a blessing in disguise because it helps her stay thin. Throwing out burnt toast (as opposed to scraping off the charred bits and eating the rest) always feels vaguely decadent.
One of the little things she finds most annoying about being lactose intolerant is how expensive nondairy cocoa mix is. "Born In The USA" nerd rage aside, Steph really does like Springsteen. Sometimes Steph regrets that she was born twenty years too late to be a riot grrrl. She has complicated feelings about the Church, but currently still identifies as Catholic. A disproportionately high number of her RPG characters have been female paladins.
Bucky once called her "a noble direwolf trapped in a chihuahua's body." She sorted herself into Gryffindor. Tolkien's work is very important to her. It's her fourth attempt, but this time she's going to make it all the way through The Silmarillion. Steph takes after mother in most respects, but she got her dad's nose.
The first winter at Northeastern Polygnostic was a nasty shock - Steph hadn't fully grasped how much colder most of New York state was compared to Brooklyn. Steph owns a substantial collection of cute sweaters. Because of her protanomaly, Steph can't distinguish between shades of red very well, so she always brings Bucky along when she buys makeup. Her feet get cold easily, and she only sleeps without socks during the hottest part of summer. She's been doing yoga for her scoliosis for about a year.
She got really bad ear infections when she was a little kid. Steph keeps herself in pocket money leading an art class twice a week at the university's childcare center and doing pinup and character portrait commissions. Apple spice is her favorite flavor. Sarah Rogers was kind of a health-foodie (in a non-crank way), which left its mark on Steph's tastebuds. It isn't that she expects all protagonists to be infallible moral paragons - nobody's perfect and it's important to have room for character growth and conflict - but Steph has a hard time getting into stories where half the cast need a stern lecture about their priorities and life choices and the other half just need to be slapped.
