“You’ll find someone new.”
“She’d want you to move on with your life, Kyu.”
“She’s in a better place now.”
“Everything happens for a reason.”
Dull, lifeless, blank eyes stared at the amber liquid he was swirling in a glass before he swiftly turned and hurled it at the fireplace; the sound of shattering glass reaching his ears.
The flames roared up as he slumped onto the floor.
“They don’t know anything.”
~-~-~-~-~-~
“Oppa?”
“Hmm..?”
There was a light smile, almost of a ghost of it really, that lit up her face; the swing she was on slowly and gently moving forward and backward, forward and backward as her feet brushed against the sand every so often. “Where do you see yourself ten years from now?”
“Eh?” His eyebrows rose; his own swing immobile and his sock-clad feet buried halfway under the sand. His shoes were placed tidily at the sight. “Why’d you ask and become sappy all of a sudden?”
She shrugged absently. “No reason.”
Kyuhyun didn’t really take long to think about it. “Well, I’d like to be a successful stage actor ten years from now. Maybe a song writer, too. Sounds good?”
“Sounds good.” The brunette nodded, shooting him a look. “That’s all you see yourself as in ten years?”
He knew the answer that she was surely hoping to hear, even if she wouldn’t readily admit it. A part of him felt like teasing her, pretend to be clueless and naïve about it, just so he can see how much it means to her. But he decided against it.
“I still see myself with you in ten years.”
This time, it was her eyebrows that rose but he could clearly see that the answer pleased her. “Now who’s all sappy?”
The corner of his lips lifted in that trademark Cho Kyuhyun smirk. “I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t mean it.”
Life was the biggest bastard of them all.
He’d said that he still saw them together after ten years and he firmly believed that when he said it. He believed that even after ten years, they’d still have each other; a fact that wouldn’t change even if the ten became twenty, thirty, fifty, sixty years.
But he didn’t get the ten years he thought he’d have.
He didn’t even get five years.
For less than half a year after he said those words, she said goodbye
“Where is she? Where the hell is she?” Kyuhyun came barrelling in the hospital, not really seeing anything except for his best friend, who had gotten up on his feet from being seated on one of the chairs. “What the hell happened? Where is she? I have to see her. Is she alright? I need to know if she’s okay.”
Shim Changmin’s face had gone pale. Kyuhyun wouldn’t have noticed it if he didn’t meet his best friend’s grief-stricken eyes. It was then he noticed how Jung Yunho had crashed down to the ground and was openly sobbing, how Im Yoona let out a scream of despair into her hands, how Jessica Jung remained seated, a shell of the girl she normally was; her face blank, her eyes haunted.
“No…” He heard Wu Yifan choke out the word behind him as if he already knew what was going on
It was when he noticed the anguish cry that Choi Siwon made; the older man collapsing in tears. Amber Liu had taken a seat beside Yoona; her face buried against the latter’s arm as her body shook violent at each and every sob that erupted from her throat
Wide, hesitant eyes shifted back to his best friend and dread filled every inch of his body. An unreadable expression filled Changmin’s face; tears welling up in his eyes.
“. . . Min?”
The only reply he gave to Kyuhyun’s many questions was a shake of his head.
“No…” Kyuhyun reeled back as if he was slapped so hard; Changmin reaching for him when he lost his footing.
This couldn’t be. It just simply couldn’t be.
“No… No, no, no, no, no. Oh god, no.” A crazed, grief-stricken look filled his eyes as they darted around in search for a doctor. He straightened up against the taller man’s hold. “No, that can’t be. It’s not possible. I need to see her. I have to see her. I have to see. Where’s the doctor? There must be some sort of mistake. It can’t be. I need to see her.”
Changmin held him back before he could get anywhere, tightening his grasp on his broken best friend when he struggled and tried to break free. “Kyu…”
“Get out of the way, Shim!” He yelled, struggling as hard as he could but he was no match for Changmin, especially when Yifan and Siwon came to help. “Let go of me! Let go of me! Those damn bastards got it all wrong. I need to see her. They made a mistake. They made a mistake.”
“I’m so sorry, Kyu.”
Kyuhyun’s legs gave way and he slumped to the cold, hard floor, taking Changmin down with him. “No… Goddamn it, no.”
And all there was left to do was cry.

“There you are.” Changmin let out a sigh of relief as he jogged toward his best friend, who had just stepped out of his car and locked the doors. “Where have you been? You turned off your phone. you didn’t tell anyone where you were. Everyone’s been worried.”
His eyes drifted to the other cars scattered on the driveway and the respective owners who all looked relieved at the sight of him. True enough, everyone was there and they really did seem worried. But all their worries were pointless, at least for him. They should’ve known better to wonder where he was.
“Where else would I be?”
Changmin looked taken aback for a second before he let out a breath. “You went to her again?”
“Do you really have to ask, Shim?”
“It’s been three years.”
“Three years is nothing. I’ve loved her all my life.” With that, he pushed past his best friend, not bothering to acknowledge any of their other friends as he walked up the front steps, unlocked the door, stepped inside and slammed the door shut.

“So this is what it’s like.” Her words were whispered that he was sure he’d missed them if he wasn’t paying attention.
The clock read two thirty nine in the morning yet here they were, still wide awake. Kyuhyun lied down on his back; an arm under his head to slightly prop it up. She was settled on top of him; her cheek pressed against his bare chest. The air was cold but they both felt warm. It made Kyuhyun smile.
“What is what like?”
She lifted her head so that she can look at his eyes. “So this is what it’s like to love somebody your whole life.”
A smirked danced on his face. “So you mean to tell me that even back in kindergarten and the first few years of elementary when you screamed it to my face just how much you hated me, you meant the exact opposite? As early as that time?”
“Dork.” She slapped the palm of her hand against his chest half-heartedly. “I don’t even think falling in love that early is possible but…”
“But..?” His eyebrows rose in interest as he prompted her to continue.
A dreamy smile crossed her lips as she inched upward to kiss him. “I’ve known you all my life and even back when we were nothing but just friends, I loved you then. I probably didn’t know it that time. But I’m sure. And you know what?”
“What?”
“As long as my heart’s beating, I’ll love you. I know I will.”
“Then you really will love me all your life.”
Her life lasted for twenty seven years.

“It’s Kyuhyun oppa!”
“Ah, ahjussi! You came!”
“Shh! Don’t call him ahjussi! He’s not old!”
“Kyuhyun oppa, I made a drawing for you. Would you like to see it?”
Kyuhyun looked down at the little girl standing by his feet; a warm smile on his face as he lifted her up in his arms. “Of course I would.”
When those times came that he missed her so bad it was too hard to bear, he came here in the children’s hospital she often volunteered in. She had always claimed it was fun and very fulfilling and he’d even accompany her a handful of times. Whenever he was with the children, he could feel her there with them - with him - and though it didn’t change the fact that she was gone, the pain ebbed away even just for a while.
“Here…” The toddler handed him a sheet of pink paper once they were seated; he on a chair and she on his lap.
He took the paper; his eyes glazing over when he saw that it was a drawing of him and an angel. He often told the children about her and how she had been his princess once upon a time but was now the most beautiful angel in heaven. He’d made it sound like some fairy tale because heaven knew how they were too young to learn about the pains of life. But it made him happy that he was able to share a piece of her with them.
Kyuhyun mustered a smile as he kissed the girl’s cheek. “It’s beautiful. Can I keep it?”
She nodded shyly. “Yes, oppa.”
“Oh.” A new voice from the doorway caught everyone’s attention; Kyuhyun turning his head to find a tall, pale, shy-looking, conservatively-dressed brunette standing by the door; her face slightly flushed in embarrassment. “I didn’t know this room had a volunteer. I’m sorry for interrupting. Please excuse me.”
“Wait.” He called out before he could really think about it, watching as she paused mid-step and turned to look at him. “Are you… Are you a volunteer too?”
She nodded once. “Yes.”
“I think these kids could use one more playmate.”

“Seo Joohyun, huh?”
Kyuhyun shot his best friend a warning look. “Don’t start.”
Changmin raised his hands in defense. “I didn’t mean anything by that. Chill.”
He rolled his eyes, and went back to nursing his bottle of beer.
“But you know, Kyu. I don’t think she’d take it against you if… you know. Moved on or something. It’s been nearly four years.”
“I’ve loved her all of my life,” was all Kyuhyun said in reply.
~-~-~-~-~-~
“Kyuhyun oppa!” Seohyun, as their co-workers fondly called her, called out, running to meet him as he stepped out of the elevators. “Are you on your way home?”
He nodded. “Yeah. You?”
“I’m heading to the general hospital in the other building.”
“General hospital?” Kyuhyun repeated as they walked out of the children’s hospital. “Why? Are you sick?”
Seohyun shook her head. “I have to go there for a monthly check up.”
“Why?” A concerned look crossed his face. “Is there something wrong?”
She giggled softly; the two pausing when they reached the bottom of the steps. “I had a heart condition… this is really like my second chance in life, if you think about it.”
~-~-~-~-~-~
They walked on the sidewalk in silence; Kyuhyun holding the umbrella between them to keep them both suitably covered. Her hand found its place on the crook of his arm and she was humming softly to herself as they walked; the rain relentlessly pelting their umbrella and their surroundings.
“I love you.”
She peered up at him, stopped her humming, and grinned. “Right back at you, Cho.”
~-~-~-~-~-~
“See you tomorrow!” Seohyun kissed the little boy’s forehead goodbye before his nursed wheeled him out of the play area.
Kyuhyun looked up from the pile of toys he was tidying up. “Are they all gone?”
“All of them, oppa, though Shinae looked like she was going to put up a fight when-” She cut herself off when she heard the rain pour without warning. “Oh no.”
“What do you mean ‘oh no’?”
“It’s raining and I don’t have an umbrella.” Seohyun admitted sheepishly. “I was hoping that I can go home early but it looks like I have to wait it out.”
“Oh.” He straightened up. “Well, we can share my umbrella if you like.”
The brunette frantically shook her hands. “No, no. I don’t want to be an inconvenience.”
“It’s fine. I promised.” Kyuhyun dumped the last of the toys in the basket. “There. Looks like we’re done. Do you want to grab some coffee downstairs in the cafeteria?”
His sudden question caught her off-guard and faint blush crept to her cheeks.
Kyuhyun inwardly cursed himself for making things all awkward and for not really thinking before he opened his mouth. “If you don’t want to, then it’s fi-”
“I’d like too, oppa.”
~-~-~-~-~-~
“I think you’re started to like her.” Yoona said bluntly and with no preamble. “That Seohyun girl you’ve been talking about.”
“Not true.” His voice was indignant.
“No one’s going to hate you for moving on, you know. Especially not unnie.”
~-~-~-~-~-~
“So this is what it’s like to love somebody your whole life.”
Those words rung in his mind, repeating themselves over and over again as he sat by her grave; his arms pulling his legs to his chest. Kyuhyun rocked back and forth as he allowed himself to cry for the first time in a very long time. Everyone was saying it was alright, that it was time for him to continue living. It had been nearly five years already. But it didn’t erase the feeling that he was betraying her somehow, even if he knew deep down in his heart that she really would’ve wanted him to move on too. It was just the kind of selfless person that she was.
“I’m sorry…” He whispered to the wind. “I’m sorry…”
~-~-~-~-~-~
“Your monthly appointment is today, right?” Kyuhyun asked as he and Seohyun walked out the children’s hospital; their shifts having just ended.
She nodded. “In half an hour.”
“I hope you don’t mind me asking but…” An unsure look crossed his face as they walked down the steps. “What happened? About your heart condition, I mean.”
“I was born with it. It really didn’t bother me that much up until a complication happened and I needed a heart transplant as soon as possible.” Seohyun smiled sadly, coming to a stop at the bottom of the steps. “My condition became critical and for a long time, we thought I wouldn’t be able to find a match. But a miracle happened and I was able to find one.”
“That’s really great.” Kyuhyun said genuinely. “Do you know who your donor is?”
“I had the surgery nearly five years ago. The girl who gave me her heart… She had an accident.” She had such a faraway look in her eyes that she didn’t notice how Kyuhyun visibly stiffened by her side. “I was told that the doctors were doing everything they could and she regained consciousness at some point. But she knew she wouldn’t last and so she told one of the doctors that she was giving up her organs for donation.”
It felt like his throat suddenly clamed up and his vision was saying. Reaching out for the railing of the stairs to keep him upright; Kyuhyun lost all color on his face; his breathing becoming labored. He suddenly felt cold… very, very cold. It couldn’t be. It really couldn’t be.
“Do… Do you know her name?”
“Her name was Sooyoung.” She answered. “Choi Sooyoung.”
“As long as my heart’s beating, I’ll love you. I know I will.”
