Once upon a time, there was a Kimunkle named Riiya, who had a best friend named Upas. Riiya also had a son of eight years-namely, Senri. At that time, Senri had no +Anima, meaning he was defenceless, should he ever be attacked.
And so, clearly, one day he was. He, his father, Upas, and a few other Kimunkle went out searching for Amurui, a vicious bear that attacked humans. Unfortunately, it was Senri who discovers Amurui first, and by ‘discover,’ I mean that Amurui emerged from a bush and clawed out Senri’s left eye. Rendered frozen in shock by the attack, Senri was carried to safety by his father, as Amurui killed the other Kimunkle and injured Upas. To defend his friend and son, Riiya transformed-completely-and attacked Amurui. He came out victorious, but at a price-the fight had caused his +Anima to go out of control. Despite Upas’s protests, he then proceeded to lash out at Senri, who had come to his senses, leaving permanent scars across the boy’s chest.
Good news and bad news: The good news is that he regained a degree of control over himself. The bad news is that he used it to give his +Anima to Senri, losing his own life in the process. Along with that, his +Anima had picked up parts of Amurui’s spirit-which were now Senri’s burden to deal with. Not only that, but Senri also gained amnesia thanks to this incident, although one could consider that good luck. Upas certainly did, in any case.
This was far from the end of Senri’s troubles, however. On top of amnesia, he also lost the ability to form new memories and became emotionless, like a shell. Two years later, he also lost his entire tribe when the neighbouring country, Sailand, attacked and enslaved and slaughtered everyone. Senri was taken as a slave and eventually sold to a woman named Crystala-though things started to look up for him at this point. Crystala was a kind lady, who was patient with Senri’s quirks and even gave him a method of remembering things-by placing flowers in a book. She also made him the caraven’s chef assistant, as his body remembered what his mind didn’t.
Amurui wasn’t gone, though. During a trip to the country of Astaria, bandits attacked the caravan. This caused Senri to lose control of his +Anima, injuring several bandits and definitely killing at least one-a kill that would come back in the form of revenge. But I digress. Before he could harm his fellow slaves, Crystala knocked him out.
When he woke up, he was surprised to find that instead of bandages around his eye, what had previously been a sash was now an eyepatch, tied by Crystala. She explained to him that this was to prevent his +Anima from taking over him again, and so, he was to never take it off. He promised, and to this day, he still vows to keep it.
Remember that kill, however? As it turns out, the victim’s brother was obviously none too pleased, and two years later, when the caravan made another trip to Astaria, he and the bandits attacked again. This time, the victim’s brother singled out Senri, attempting to strangle him with a noose. Unfortunately, the rope became tangled between the horse’s leg, sending the bandit-and Senri-over the edge of the cliff and into the river below. Crystala searched for Senri desperately, but eventually, she had to return to Sailand, leaving everyone to presume Senri as dead. Seeing as how this event took place two years before the start of the series, though, Senri clearly survived, and during those two years, he travelled across Astaria, searching for Crystala in return.
Instead, he found Cooro and Husky: a crow +Anima and a fish +Anima, respectively. He was looking over the town of Abon, protecting its flower fields from a gang that wanted to dig the fields for gold. In time, the gang realized that was no gold and left, taking Senri’s purpose for staying with them. And thus, he decided to accompany Cooro and Husky on their journey.
Along the way, they picked up a fourth member-a bat +Anima named Nana. The four traversed through the country through numerous adventures, finally reaching the mountains that Senri grew up in. Although he had no memories of the place, he still felt a connection drawing him there, despite Husky and Nana’s decision to stay in the city for the winter. Cooro, on the other hand, supported Senri’s decision, forcing all of them to follow Senri.
There, the group came across a bear, or rather, illusion of one. The significance of this? Upas is the one who created it. Again, even though Senri held no memories of the man, his +Anima-Amurui-reacted, as did Senri via cutting off his consciousness to keep his +Anima restrained. When he woke up, he lost even more memories, this time of Cooro and the others.
Under the guise of wanting to help Senri regain his memories, Upas took him on a walk through the mountain. In reality, Upas’s intentions were much darker: he was planning on killing Senri, to end Amurui’s life once and for all. During the battle, Senri’s eyepatch came off, and given his promise to Crystala long ago, one can guess what the result was:
Yet again, Amurui took control.
Luckily, before he can do any harm (to another human, at least-Amurui’s son is a different story), his friends restore his human side, along with his memories of them.
As of 1/31/10: Afterwards, the group headed to Sailand under Husky’s wishes. While Cooro and Nana flew off to locate another town, Senri and Husky made camp. This proved to be their downfall, as the smoke caught the intention of slave hunters-and oops, Husky forgot about one troublesome little law of Sailand’s: all Kimunkle and +Anima must become slaves.
The two put up a good fight, but are ultimately captured.
[Personality]
Six years ago, Senri was almost a shell of a person-like a doll that reacted to just about nothing.
Six years later, Senri has gotten better, but is still very much… abnormal. He seems emotionless to everyone he meets, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that he actually is. He smiles, he gets angry, he can be sad, and he notably has mood swings-but his expression of emotions is very restrained and typically not long-lasting. One character theorizes that this isn’t just a simple quirk of his, but rather the consequence of his +Anima. Rather than learning to control his +Anima, Senri keeps it tightly reined, and therefore, should he lose control of his emotions, he loses control of his +Anima as well. Given that he only became this way after gaining his +Anima, it’s likely a true theory.
However, he’s not merely someone trying very, very hard not to feel: all of this is more of a subconscious act on Senri’s part. After all, he holds no memories of what happened to him in his past, or exactly how he received his +Anima. He is genuinely that simple-minded, as he sees and he does, and that’s about it. He’s noted for spacing out often and being easily distracted, as well as being childishly simplistic in the way he seems to act/view things, to the point where one has to question his mental capacity (or lack thereof). He’s not someone who can function in normal society either, seeing as how his understanding of what should be ‘obvious’ or ‘appropriate’ is also lacking. Common sense doesn’t exist for him.
Neither does social sense, for that matter. Senri is extremely quiet, rarely forming full sentences or saying more than a few words at once. He tends to ignore others, or drop conversations without even fully realizing that he was holding one to begin with. He expresses more through his actions-except the problem with that is the fact that Senri happens to be on the aggressive side. His usual reaction is to resort to violence first-the age of the other party isn’t important-and can usually only be stopped by someone he’s already deemed as not an enemy. He’s not exactly a bloodthirsty person, as he’s never shown to have an honest enjoyment for fighting; rather, it’s simply what he knows and thus uses first.
On that note, Senri’s actually quite a kind person. He’s one of the most obedient and loyal people you could ever hope to meet who never asks for anything in return. His own well-being means nothing to him, but on the other hand, his friends’ safety means everything. He’ll do whatever it takes to keep them and everything else important to him safe, which, combined with his more obvious traits, tends to give the impression of him being callous. It’s also not that hard to become his friend, as he never holds grudges and is willing to protect or help out complete strangers, even if it makes him a wanted criminal in the process (a situation that occurs twice in the series).
[Specialties/Abilities] Senri’s abilities can mainly be separated into two categories: wilderness-related and combat-related.
In the former, he’s a talented whittler and an even better cook, the appearance of the food aside. He’s also able to identify the species of animal just by looking at a strand of hair, along with being familiar with many different types of plants.
In the latter, he is a +Anima, meaning he harnesses the power of the bear. More specifically, his right arm can transform into that of the animal’s, to a certain degree. This gives him large claws and incredible strength. Even without it, he’s fast, strong, and enduring. Injuries alone tend not to keep him down for very long-as shown in one situation, even after being shot in the shoulder with an arrow and receiving numerous off-screen wounds, he kept on fighting until he was sedated (and even then, it apparently took a lot of sedatives). And then, a day or so afterwards, he was still strong enough to pull along a rock (the kind tied to an ankle and meant to stop prisoners from moving) with no difficulty. On that note, he seems to heal quickly as well.
Apparently, he's capable of resisting high temperatures as well, if
this scene is any indication.
[Affection] Senri's going to be... pretty nonreactive to most signs of affection. Mostly because he doesn't care/get it. As for himself, he has little understanding of that something called 'personal space,' but probably won't go any further than a hug.
[Fighting] Injure, yes, kill, not without permission. Senri, while not the best fighter, can hold his own fairly well (see Abilities). And yes, he'd invoke a fight--attack first, think later, after all.
[Other Permissions] Preferably nothing from before his amnesia be mentioned. Anything after that is fair game, though!
[Other Facts] To expand on the whole +Anima thing, it's like having a spirit inside of you, although Senri seems to really be the only one with a distinct spirit. And in case it wasn't clear enough, Senri's eye patch works as a restraint for Amurui, hence why he doesn't fully transform.
Also, he's fond of sweet things, like honey and candy, though he doesn't actually eat much. According to author notes, he's probably the kind of person who'd eat slowly, little by little. On the plus side, as long as it's edible, he'll eat it.
