It starts with just a pinprick of light, small in the darkness before growing, shining more and more brightly until the entire space is full of swirling lights, floating and dancing and bobbing.
And she's watching them from far away as they float over the trees, her arms resting on the windowsill before her as she leans forwards, simply sighing with that desire to see them. Because she knows they're meant for her. There's just something that calls to her, every year when those lights float in the sky on her birthday.
"Why can't I go outside?"

The little girl turns to ask the question of a woman with dark hair and looks so different from her own, a woman who holds out her arms.
"The outside world is a dangerous place, filled with horrible, selfish people. You must stay here, where you're safe. Do you understand, my flower?"
She answers "Yes, Mother," but with those lights bobbing and dancing around her she's not so sure she does understand after all. After all, they're beautiful, in the sky and all around her, but when she reaches out to touch one it just moves away and away and away.
