Name: Sakuya Izayoi
Fandom: Touhou Project
Gender: Female
Age: Late Teens
Time Period: After the events of Touhou Hisoutensoku / Unthinkable Natural Law.
Wing Color: Gray, fluffy.
History:
Sakuya is an enigmatic young woman, and her history before coming to live at the Scarlet Devil Mansion is quite the mystery. It is something that is only known to herself - and perhaps to her mistress, Remilia - but that hasn't stopped others in Gensokyo from theorizing what a young human is doing in the service of vampires and youkai. Some say she was raised at the Mansion from her childhood, and others claim that she must have offered her service willingly, or else she would not be there.
The most commonly-heard theory is that Sakuya once lived in the world beyond Gensokyo as a young would-be vampire hunter - with a completely different name. Confident in her abilities, she set her sights on the Scarlet Devil, Remilia herself. Unfortunately, she found herself outmatched by Remilia Scarlet ... but rather than taking her life, the vampire spared her out of respect for her skills, and gave her new name, and with it a new fate - to come work for them as the chief maid of the household and Remilia's personal attendant.
Of course, that's just a rumor, too. Only a few people know the truth, and they're not telling.
Her actions after entering the employ of Remilia Scarlet are significantly more well-known by the inhabitants of Gensokyo. During the "Scarlet Devil Incident," Sakuya attempted to repel a certain shrine maiden and magician seeking to dispel the scarlet mist that covered Gensokyo, but was defeated - and could only watch as they defeated her mistress Remilia, too.
Remilia's defeat and the unexpected ease at which the vampire got along with her defeaters afterwards surprised Sakuya, and she very slowly started to open up to the outside world beyond the Mansion. She assisted Reimu and Marisa in solving the various threats and incidents that popped up around Gensokyo, though she claims it was mainly for the sake of her Mistress.
Until she got replaced as the third playable character by another shrine maiden. Isn't it sad, Sakuya?
Personality: Sakuya's personality is as mysterious as her history and her true name. The maid has demonstrated countless facades over time, and it's unclear which of them is the "real" Sakuya - if any of them are.
With her mistresses Flandre and Remilia, Sakuya is loyal, devoted, even tender at times - but not to the point of being a total doormat. Within the Scarlet Devil Mansion she's usually quite polite and even friendly to someone she considers her equal (like Patchouli), though stern to those who are her subordinates (the fairy maids and Meiling). This doesn't mean she's totally without empathy for them; she just expects them to do their jobs and gets irritated when they don't. At least for Meiling, anyway - she doesn't expect much from the fairies.
To strangers, Sakuya is very reserved and distant. She's rarely outright cold, and almost never drops her elegant, polite shell, but it's very hard to know what she's thinking. That said it's easier (read: possible) for her to warm to someone since meeting Reimu and Marisa - but it's by no means likely.
Though she gives off the impression of being serious and completely collected all the time to those who don't know her, Sakuya also has shown an occasionally silly side, too. She's been known to crack sly jokes every once in a while about her work or a situation, and has even been seen acting slightly spacey and scatterbrained a few times. Of course, that could be just as much a careful act as anything else, or it could be genuine - after spending so much of her life stopping time and space and living around vampires and other youkai, Sakuya may just not think like normal humans. Maybe she's just odd.
The common threads in almost all of Sakuya's different facades and masks are her unwavering loyalty and devotion to her mistress Remilia (and the household) and her quiet, composed elegance - she isn't called the "perfect and elegant maid" for nothing. Her top priority is always to do her duty - but is that all there is to her? Perhaps these are the only things that make up the "real" Sakuya; perhaps they're as much a cover as anything else.
Strengths:
Physical: Timey-Wimey Ninja Maid - Sakuya is in peak physical condition, is an expert at throwing knives and is capable of near-magical sleight of hand. (She's also a really good cook!) But this pales in comparison to her mystical ability to manipulate time (and consequently space). Sakuya can slow and freeze time, allowing her to turn a simple knife throw into a barrage in (to anyone else) the blink of an eye. Freezing time is also the only thing that allows her to keep the SDM running wholly single-handedly.
Emotional: The Perfect and Elegant Maid - Sakuya is used to running a large mansion (with a particularly demanding mistress) all by herself. As such, she maintains her grace and poise in almost any situation, whether dealing with extravagant food requests or finding herself ascending a mountain in search of what is apparently a mysterious Celestial being drawing energy from peoples' bodies in the form of red mist. She is the very definition of cool under fire.
Mental: Part-Time Problem Solving Maid - Though she claims to only be in her late teens, Sakuya has the maturity and the problem-solving mind of someone far older (perhaps she is older mentally due to her constant use of her time stop? Who can say?) She's a very rational and reasonable person, and can probably work out a solution to almost any problem thrown at her - time is always on her side, after all.
Weaknesses:
Physical: Only Human - Yes, Sakuya is in tip-top shape with the superhuman ability to manipulate time and space. But despite that, despite her magic-seeming knives, she is just human - which is quite a liability in Gensokyo. She does not have the superhuman health, durability and immortality of the youkai she knows; and will take wounds just as any human would. In addition, her time stop ability merely lets her move outside of time, it doesn't change her own abilities at all. She still has to do all the chores and set all her throwing knives by hand, so it all comes down to her own skill and endurance.
Emotional: Perhaps Too Devoted? - Sakuya is incredibly devoted to her mistress Remilia, to the exclusion of almost all else. This and her cool, distant air make it difficult for her to trust anyone else, and for anyone else to trust her. She has difficulty relying on any but the others at the SDM, and if anything were to happen to them, she would find it very hard to make new friends.
Mental: Odd Thought - Whether she's simply grown accustomed to the odd and often unreasonable demands of her mistress Remilia, or whether living with vampires and youkai almost exclusively has skewed her perception of things, Sakuya doesn't always share the same "common sense" that most people do. When Remilia asked her to go buy a teacup that matched Reimu's, Sakuya bought a broken one - because Remilia had broken Reimu's.

First Person: (Plz to be doing a Q&A! Sakuya isn't the type to really ramble.)
Third Person: Home. Such an interesting concept when you thought about it, wasn't it? Was it a place? Certainly there were those with places that they called home, but was the name alone enough? What did it mean to have a home?
Quiet, quick steps echoed through empty streets as the maid made her way home from her day's - or rather, night's - shopping, two large bags filled with various goods and purchases in her hands. She was responsible for a household, after all, and mouths did not feed themselves. But was this house now her home?
She'd had another home once, in times that were increasingly difficult to remember. It was foggy and indistinct in her mind now, with formless shapes and colors and sounds all that came to mind - or were they all that she simply cared to recall? For years since, the house of the Scarlet Devil... that had been her home. Sakuya was its keeper, and every night when she tucked herself into bed (never collapsing no matter how weary her limbs were - she had more pride than that) she'd slept knowing that this was her place. This was her home.
This was not the Scarlet Devil Mansion, with its long, windowless halls and massive musty library in constant need of dusting. This was not Gensokyo, with irritating black-white witches barging their way in to disturb the premises (although it did seem to share Gensokyo's predilection for chaos, now that she thought about it). It had nothing in common with the place she'd called home.
Except that her mistress was here. And so was the young mistress, and the gatekeeper and the librarian - even that little imp she kept as a partner. They were all here, and she was their keeper here as much as she had been back... home.
Was home that location, that mansion? Or was her home here, with her mistress and her duty?
The world took on an unnatural stillness as Sakuya stepped forward, the air growing thick and heavy as she pushed her way through it into the house that she kept - as frozen in time as the rest of this world around her. There was much to do tonight, and though time was never in short supply with her, she had better things to do than sit around as a philosopher.
So why did her thoughts keep coming back to that strange idea?
