It's not dark, you're misunderstanding me, bro.

mm'kay I adore The Vampire Dairies. That has never been a secret. I honest-to-god believe it is one of the best written series on television right now, and I never seen a twenty something episode per season program as well paced as this series. I often give it the dues I think it deserves. However, I wish Kevin Williamson would realize how bad ( Read more... )

Amara and I watched Vampire Dairies together tonight, and uh we spent half the time whenever Bonnie was on screen debating the fate of the new black family. It was just ridiculous how right I was. The show has been so good with twists, but they can be so damn predictable.

mhm don't I know it. I could've kept the peace over Pearl's death, then they took Anna. :'(

Yeah, TVD is one of my very favorite shows on right now and seriously, the pacing is magnificent. I love shows like that. But they really, really need to fix their diversity factor, like you said. I mean, it isn't hard to have a POC character that is 100% human and you know, on the good side. It just gives off that really uncomfortable thing where lol POCs on this show aren't human.

Oh, Pearl and Anna. I actually loved what the show did with them (except for them dying but omg I am so much more bitter about Anna because she was perfect).

I agree with this entire post. As soon as Bonnie touched new guy who's name escapes me at the moment and new guy's dad started asking questions I was thinking 'No. You can't be doing this again, can you, show?' SURE ENOUGH. I mean, it's ridiculous at this point.

I agree. All of the witches have been black and subservient to a white vampire. I don't know how bad a message that sends out. :/

I really do not watch enough Vampire Diaries to be able to intelligently comment (ugh, or even comment on ANYTHING, as I just spelled "intelligently" wrong twice), but from the times that I have channel-surfed past it and gotten sucked in, I have been a little taken aback at just how white it is. Like you said, the lilywhite-ness of the Dawson's Creek cast was such a big thing back when it was on, to the point that I vaguely remember EW articles about it, that you'd think KW would have diversified more, if only to selfishly cover his own ass. I ended up watching Masquerade and I was going "Well, of course the black girl's a witch. Isn't that all they are on this show?" I haven't seen enough to see the "or end up dead" option of the pattern you noticed, but once again, that doesn't surprise me.

During the New York Comic Con KW mentioned he feared The Vampire Dairies was not diverse enough, so he is aware of one problem. He nevertheless has not been able to reconcile these fears without avoiding, well, inserting this "black people are witches; therefore, all witches are black" trope into his writing. It is discouraging, especially since they all have been subservient to white vampires.
