Mad as a hatter

Today I learnt that the term "Mad as a hatter" came from the old days when hat makers would use mercury to make/mold the top hats (consequently out of rabbit fur). The mercury got into their system and made them crazy. Love little tib-bits like that. It's were the character of the Mad Hatter came from in Alice in Wonderland

Wie geht's? (pr "Vee gates", means "How's it going" in German)

nicht schlecht (pr "nicht shlecht", the ch are like a k but don't close your throat, means "not bad" in German

"How are you" is literally "Wie sind Sie" or "Wie bist du", but neither is actually used in German.
