Wow, Michelle! that's fabulous about the freelance work! What an important step, and so early on, too!!! They must be very impressed with you to have given you this offer. Is it going to be business writing? (I know it's not your favourite, but you could come to enjoy it, and it's definitely a great step forward ( ... )

Thanks Eva! Yeah, i'm definitely really excited about the offer to work for them more. It would still be business writing, and while it'snot my favourite thing to do, it's not like I dislike it. Plus, it's great experience to have, and I'm just grateful to have a string of published articles in a major paper!

I'm really glad for you guys that things improved for Alex. It's one of the weirdest paradoxes of society that we allowwork to dominate our lives so completely even though we spend less than 50% of our time there. I hope things pick up for him too, because he can't take things as they are much longer. It's a combination of the job being disappointing and problems around his vision/the technology they use. Not a good mix. But it's nice to know that someone understands!

Hi Michelle! I'm talking to you on MSN right now, but one can never receive too many LJ comments ;)

I've always thought that "having your cake and eating it too" referred to the French revolution? Like how Marie Antoinette said "let them eat cake", because she had it and the poor peasants didn't, but she didn't get to eat it cause they chopped off her head? How charming. Anyway, I may have just made up that association, so don't listen to me. The other expressions are very good points, English as a language doesn't make much sense...
