My summer thus far has been very nearly perfect - it's consisted of masses of free time, wonderful weather, great books and dvds to enjoy, lots of tasty things to eat and drink, just the right amount of travel, and some fabulous shopping successes (yay sundresses!). The only thing lacking has been a summer album or two. Last summer I listened to ( Read more... )

i have had mason jennings' new album, boneclouds, on pretty steady repeat since its mid-may release; it's in itunes format but i need to burn a new car copy, anyway, and i can send you some tracks when i get home.

i've also been seriously digging whit hill & the postcards recently and the first album, we are here, is on the to-buy list as soon as this month's stipend comes in. you can download a couple of tracks from the website, under "music". and they're from detroit!

(p.s. i owe you email, but the answer is, yes, the boy will be starting at yale in august! so - if it's financially feasible - a move to boston for me post-graduation is very, very likely. *grin*)

Send me some Mason tracks, yeah, that would be awesome. You know, I don't think in all the times you and I have talked about music that I've ever quite got around to getting any mason jennings music from you. Which is deeply wrong in many ways. *boggle*

Also: YALE!!!!!!!!!!!!! NEW ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 5 hrs from me!!!!!!!!!!! Hon, that is the most fabulous news. Even if you don't move up, just the fact you'll likely be in New England on a semi-regular basis and I will to is SO FABULOUS!!!!!

when i get home, i'll make you a mason zip file and send it to you! and yes, it is deeply wrong. considering how much i love him, my failure to give you any of his music is WRONG. everyone should have at least a couple of mason tracks!

i will be in new england on a semi-regular basis! i am very much looking forward to it; i'll miss the regular trips back to chicago, of course, but the northeast up that way is an area i've never spent much time in, and it will be SUPER exciting to have a reason to go visit there! (AND SEE YOU LOTS AND LOTS! HOORAY! *twirls you*)

If nothing else, i should have Mason tracks for when I miss you.

I'm so very, very glad we'll have lots of opportunities to see each other next year. And of course you must come up to Montreal whenever you can.

What I am listening to this summer: a mix-CD (made by a pal) with a lot of Richard Thompson; the new Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint CD, "The River in Reverse,"; Pet Shop Boys, "Fundamental."

In concludion -- HUGS.

CONCLUSION, not 'concludion.' I just don't know how that happened. :-(

Elvis Costello has *another* new cd out? Everytime I turn around he's got another record out - either that or I have a very odd sense of time.

Concludion is great. It's like conclusion + accordion. I love accordions. :-)

I'm going through a weird nostalgia phase right now, which means I'm listening to Dispatch's Bang Bang a lot, which is sort of one of my ultimate summer albums. And Fatboy Slim's just released Greatest Hits is pretty great for dancing about in your underpants.

Also, Islands' Return to the Sea has been on sort of constant repeat for awhile. And the new Jonny Cash, American V, is also great (it was leaked).

And you know, the album that is great for all seasons, for me at least, is Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane over the Sea. I don't know what it is about this album, but it's become this weird focal point for me. Apparently it has that effect on people.

That NMH record is one of the great, great classics, yeah. I owned it once upon a (pre-itunes) time, and lost it before I ever copied it. Boo! I should acquire it again. Definitely.

And Fatboy Slim is always fun for the underpants dance.

I have no clue who Dispatch or Islands are, so I will have to check that out. Nostalgia is good. My ultimate, ultimate summer album is Portihead's 'Dummy', which every single person on the Island of Montreal played every day, several times a day, the summer of 95 (ok, I exagerate slightly, but I can't remember anything from that summer that isn't somehow tinged with the sound of Portishead).

Thanks. I've heard Andrew Bird, though just one song I think. I'll check the others out. :-)

My friend Ben runs BaDaBing! He gave me the Beirut record a couple of months ago with that "...it's kinda weird, but you might like it..." caveat. So I didn't quite know what to expect (even though I pretty much like anything Ben has put out so far). But yes, it's stunning and beautiful and ...wow, it's hard to believe he's so young because the record feels as though was made by an old soul.

Speaking of records Ben's put out, you might very well like Sons and Daughters. Good summer music, that.

Also: Os Mutantes!

Now that you mention it, I think I remember you talking about the label before. Please feel free to tell Ben his record company rocks! I got my cd today, complete with a little note of thanks. And I only ordered it on Monday. Hooray!

It's funny, I almost emailed you last weekend to say that Beirut was playing in Cambridge on Saturday night and that you should come up for the show and cheer on my behalf. It'll be great to be back on the east coast and maybe actually see you from time to time. Heck, I could even give you your Picastro cd after all this time (I , unlike the great employees at Badabing) am not so ace with getting to a mail box.

I'll check out those recs too. *grin* Thanks.

I really, really wanted to go to that Beirut show but alas, it was in a sorta difficult-to-get-to area of Somerville and I don't have a car! Otherwise I would have gone, no hesitation... (Also, that particular club is hotter n' hellfire on a summer night!)

It'd be so fun to see you though! Do let me know next time you're swinging through town!

Picastro CD? What Picastro CD? :)
