From The Other Side
Kyuwook 799w
PG | Friendship, Romance ... or something like that (maybe not)
Ryeowook is still Ryeowook, though Kyuhyun doesn't think he is.
A/N: Dear me, dafuq is this.

Things are looking up.
For one of them, at least.
Ryeowook gets a job in the big city, where the lights are pretty and buildings are gigantic, he says. Kyuhyun is proud. Because this is his best friend we’re talking about.
They move in together because when Ryeowook asks with that uncertain smile on his face, he couldn’t find the heart to say no. It’s going to be alright, he thinks. Opportunities are great. And it’s not like his best friend is a stranger.
Although he might as well be.
Because now Ryeowook wears suits and goes to dry cleaning once a week while Kyuhyun is still in training pants and worn out rubber shoes, awkwardly dancing to familiar beats from when they were young and blithe.
He eats at the fanciest restaurants in town, drinks in bars with his colleagues. Kyuhyun is satisfied with instant ramen for lunch. And dinner. And sometimes, when he wakes up early enough, breakfast.
Ryeowook gets rid of the fringe that Kyuhyun secretly thinks looks gorgeous on the older with the way it falls so stunningly over his eyes. Kyuhyun’s hair has always been messy and unkempt. It still is.
Ryeowook is not Ryeowook the clingy boy with fat cheeks who used to follow him around, insisting on calling him hyung even if it was the other way around. Ryeowook is a man who walks with a confident gait and an even more confident smile.
Kyuhyun doesn’t know if he likes it. He doesn’t know if he likes watching his best friend from afar, waiting for the gap between them to grow impossibly large until he can no longer reach him no matter how fast he ran.
Ryeowook’s grabbing a tight hold of his dreams one by one while Kyuhyun, as gutless as ever, still can’t find the courage to run after what he wants. In fact, he still has no idea what he wants.
But he knows he’s afraid. Afraid of the day when Ryeowook realizes that he’s way out of Kyuhyun’s league.
Maybe he should do something about it. Maybe not. Maybe he’s bound to drag him down. Maybe someone like him, useless, borderline hopeless, isn’t worthy of someone who shines as bright as Kim Ryeowook.
To the other, nothing much has changed. Kyuhyun is still Kyuhyun; he’s still Ryeowook the insecure child who constantly needs his best friend by his side. They’re still two idiotic friends who stick together no matter what. He’s still as happy as he was when they first met.
I’m glad you’re here, Ryeowook says casually one night as he hands Kyuhyun a cream-colored envelope that smelled like dried roses and Ryeowook’s new life.
Kyuhyun opens it in silence and smiles a little.
You wouldn’t miss it for the world, right? Even in his crisply ironed pants and newly died hair, Ryeowook’s tone is unsure. It assures Kyuhyun that some things haven’t changed.
A few nights later, Kyuhyun finds himself listening to violins drown his short breaths and tired pants.
He’s in a brightly-lit room, two hours late. There are no chairs, no source of water in the vicinity, no familiar face.
The first thing he notices is the enormous chandelier above him. It reminds him that he isn’t supposed to be here. His faded blue shirt (that Ryeowook loves so much) does not belong in the sea of tuxedos and cocktail dresses.
From the corner of his eye he sees his best friend stumble nervously towards the small stage on the other side of the room. He barely registers what the guy beside Ryeowook is saying; there is a plaque, and the microphone is passed to his small hands.
Ryeowook clears his throat and opens his mouth to begin his speech. Kyuhyun takes a few steps forward but keeps a safe distance.
I know it’s nothing much, a shy voice says. It reminds Kyuhyun so much of the quiet little boy (too small even for his age) he met more than a decade ago. But I’d like to dedicate this one to the man who always stood by my side.
From when I was a fat kid with nerdy glasses, the people laugh, up to now when I think I’ve finally found my way.
I know it was probably a burden being with me. But thank you for staying.
“Idiot.” He whispers.
Ryeowook takes a deep bow and when he looks up, he easily finds Kyuhyun’s eyes in the crowd. And he smiles right at him. Smiles at him alone. Kyuhyun grins back and thinks maybe things are looking up.
For him too.
He thinks he understands now: one doesn’t build bridges over oceans. And he thinks that maybe there’s no need to. Because from where he’s standing the view’s actually pretty great.
