Reading Snow Crash (for the first time ever) in 2008 is kind of unnerving. It's basically here, the Metaverse is Second Life. He even called the penis avatars. The meatspace technology, like smartwheels and Rat Things seems like it'll come 'round in about 20-30 years.

(Also, Hiro Protagonist? Stephenson has got a hilarious set of writers ballsOH ( Read more... )

The size thing seems to be a non-issue for people who've been using tablets for a while. I would probably have a fit with the 4x5, I'm not too experienced with tablets myself. I think I may go for the intuos3 myself.

Thanks for the input!

(I also need a job, luckily I still have graduation checks to burn. Thought you had one, or maybe that was an internship? Are you done with grad school I can't keep anything straight.)

I don't anticipate it will be a big deal. I actually think the bigger ones are probably more of a PITA to use. Since the tablet area corresponds to your screen, all you have to do is make sure you let the artboard fill the entire screen. Since you can scale up and down in Illustrator without ruining the image quality, it doesn't really provide any benefit to go big.

Internship is done, and it was unpaid anyway. I don't go to grad school. I just pretend I do because I hate to admit to being an undergrad twice.

6x 8 is what I'd recommend but it is not necessary. I've used a 4x5 older version of the graphire for many years now and it's never done me any wrong but I could be a masochist. Figuring you're not going to upgrade a tablet anytime soon (no planned obsolescence here) I would definitely shell out the sub-300 or so it is for a nice sized intuos. Smooth handling and a comfortable size, anything bigger would require meaty arm strokes and excess gym time. For the scanner, DONT HOLD back... You must get a scanner that can fit A3 sized paper. FOR TWO PAGE SPREADS. Brands.. I cant help you there, but I can say that canon made this insanely cheap 70 dollar scanner I bought 6 years ago and its still kickin' strong today.

This one seems to come up a lot, to decent reviews. Though the drivers not being updated for future OS seems to be irritating, who knows.. I'd still look around , but just an example. A3 MOTHERFUCKERS

i love that he spends a paragraph lamenting its "retro beige" color...

the mustek 1200Pro definitely has a recent mac driver...doesn't seem so bad. i really do need an A3 scanner and these are the most affordable by far. thanks for pointing these out!

my arm strokes are always meaty btw~

I like the fact that my wacom is about the same size as my laptop screen. Made it easier to adjust to for me.

As for scenners... wish I could help but I need the same advice.
