She was just a little thing, hopelessly naive, painfully honest. She was so much like the children he played with, Souji thought, except she had such a strong sense of responsibility, more so even than some of the soldiers in the Shinsengumi.

Chizuru-chan, Chizuru-chan, Chizuru-chan. It irritated him how he ended up thinking of her more often now, especially when he was bored. What happened to baiting Hijikata-san? What happened to sparring with Saitou-kun? (Not that he could do that so much now, with his illness.)

He grinned to himself suddenly - maybe this was the time to steal Hijikata-san's haiku again? Had Chizuru heard his latest haiku, guaranteed to be hilarious? This was the perfect time, not to mention it would be a way to distract her from doing chores she didn't need to do anyway. She cleaned too much, he thought, though he knew she felt better knowing she could help out in some way, no matter how small.

And if it could get her mind off her worries for her missing father, then so much the better, not to mention triggering Hijikata-san's rage was always a plus.

"Ne, Chizuru-chan, are you busy?"

She blinked up at him owlishly. Damn, she looked rather cute like that. Souji banished that thought from his mind. "Ano, I just finished cleaning, demo, the other side of the garden might need sweeping-"

He looked at the other side. Heh, did it really matter? Chizuru-chan was so diligent with cleaning that he really couldn't see a difference. "That can wait, can it?"

She looked torn, her hands gripping the broom she held tightly. "Um, ano, hai, demo-"

"C'mon," Souji said, taking the broom from her and putting it aside. "I've got something to show you."

She hesitated for a moment, but then nodded. "Um, hai. What does Okita-san want to show me?"

He grinned. Perfect. "It's this way..."

***

"Ano, this is-"

"Wait right here, Chizuru-chan, I'll be right back." He grinned at her before entering Hijikata-san's room.

"H-Hai..." He could imagine the conflicted look in her eyes. Well, since he was a Captain, it wasn't like she could tell him not to do anything-

"There," he said. Really, Hijikata-san, he made it so easy to taunt him. No creativity at all in hiding his collection of haiku. Grasping such in his hand, he went out and placed another hand on Chizuru-chan's shoulder. She fairly jumped at the contact, causing him to chuckle. She was cute like this, not that he would tell her that.

"A-Ano, Okita-san-"

"Ne, Chizuru-chan, let's walk around."

"Hai..." She looked conflicted but turned to follow him as he made his way towards the less used parts of the headquarters. No use getting it if Hijikata-san found them too early.

"SOUJI!"

"Run, Chizuru-chan" he said quickly, pulling her hand.

"H-Hai!" She obediently ran away with him from the currently fuming Hijikata-san. "D-Demo-"

"Daijoubou, he'll cool down by dinnertime."

"SOUJI, DON'T RUN!"

"Now, why wouldn't I do that" he said mockingly, "especially when he looks so angry- then again, Hijikata-san always looks angry anyway, so it's not like his face can improve..."

"Mou, Hijikata-san doesn't always look angry" Chizuru-chan chided, her voice calmer now that they were hidden in one of the temple's numerous rooms.

"Eh?" That comment didn't sit well with Okita, much to his surprise. "What do you mean?"

Chizuru-chan clearly didn't pick up on the ire in his voice. "Hijikata-san may look stern, but many women must find him rather handsome..."

He stamped down the unpleasant feeling in his heart. "You think him handsome, Chizuru-chan?"

"Hai," she said guilelessly, looking outside worriedly to make sure Hijikata wasn't around. She turned and must have seen the frown on his face, because she quickly raised her hands in alarm. "Ano, of course, many in the Shinsengumi are also handsome, so-"

That didn't calm him down at all. "Who?"

She blushed deeply. "Ano, I- I need to go to the market to buy the ingredients for dinner-"

"Hmm? No, continue what you were about to say, Chizuru-chan" Souji said, his hand landing on the wall behind her. "Who in the Shinsengumi would you consider handsome?"

"U-Um, Okita-san-"

"Yukimura." They could hear Saitou's calm voice from behind the door. "You needed to go to the market, yes?"

"A-Ah, hai!" She quickly disengaged herself from him and, after brushing down the dust in her clothes, opened the door to let him in. Saitou looked at the two of them carefully, but said nothing about their disheveled appearance. Was Saitou... frowning? Okita didn't like that either, not that he understood why.

"Hijikata-san mentioned as such. He asked me to accompany you."

Her eyes widened before she nodded gratefully at Saitou-san, her smile brightening up the entire room. "Thank you, Saitou-san. It isn't any trouble?"

He shook his head. "Are you ready to leave? Hijikata-san has given me the money for what you might purchase."

"Y-Yes, of course" Chizuru-chan said quickly. "We must hurry, the patrols will soon finish and Heisuke-kun and Nagakura-kun will be really hungry-"

"Aa," Saitou said, his head nodding curtly. "We must go. Souji."

"Hai! Ano, Okita-san, please rest" she said, her worried eyes boring into his. "Hijikata-san will be angrier if he thinks you-"

"Fine, fine, just go" he said abruptly, cutting her off. Everything about Saitou and her conversation irked him, though he wouldn't admit why.

Hurt flashed on her face, but she quickly nodded, giving him a smile. "All right, Okita-san."

Saitou-kun frowned at him before turning to leave with Chizuru-chan.

He observed them as they left headquarters a few minutes later, Saitou turning to look at Chizuru-chan when she spoke to him. Was that a fond look in Saitou-kun's eyes? Saitou-kun never really noticed girls, so this was new.

Souji sat down hard. No, that couldn't be it. This couldn't be why he felt so irritated all this while, first while Chizuru-chan and he were talking about Hijikata-san and just now, with Saitou-kun.

"Am I..."

Jealous?

Letting the word in his mind made him realize how true it was.

He groaned inwardly. He had other matters to think about rather than that. There was Kondou-san, of course, his duties as a Shinsengumi Captain, his nagging cough...

Chizuru-chan had wanted him to rest, so he did lie down in his room then.

Thought about her again, he thought wryly. This was becoming a habit, one he didn't care to have. This was not really what he expected would happen when he was taunting her that night he found her, drenched in one of the rasetsu's blood... How troublesome.
