Dark Loyalties
As Jon stood on top of the Wall he looked out into the darkness and tried to ignore the pains in his chest. Maester Aemon’s words washed over him.
"I will not tell you to stay or go. You must make that choice yourself, and live with it for the rest of your days. As I have."
He tried to push past the urging in his heart but all he could see when he closed his eyes was Robb. Robb’s eyes. Robb’s lips. Robb’s hands. Robb’s blood spilled on the ground below the old weirwood on a warm summer’s eve, a slick rock bringing reality crashing down on boys playing at being knights.
‘That was the first time,’ Jon thought to himself. ‘I swore I wouldn’t let him fall again.’
Jon rubbed a snow encrusted glove across his face and tried to focus on the shadows below him. The stars moved ever so slowly above the kingdoms of men, turning the fates as they like. Jon shivered despite his many furs, remembering the last time he has sat atop one of Winterfell’s high walls, Robb at his side, watching as shooting stars streaked through the inky night.
“They say such things are lucky,” Robb had whispered hot in his ear. “If you could have your greatest desire made light, Snow… what would it be?”
“You can’t ask me those things, Stark.” Jon had clenched his jaw as he spoke but he didn’t try to move away from the other man as he pressed against his side. He didn’t fight the cold hand that slid along his waist. He didn’t silence the sighs that escaped his mouth as desire, dark and festering, played out under purpling clouds.
“I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch,” Jon whispered to himself, breath ghosting in front of him, “for this night and all the nights to come.” He closed his eyes as they burned in the cold wind. “Gods forgive me.”
‘Robb forgive me.’
