You know, that almost makes sense. Is that really true?
The only thing that doesn't make sense is it being melons. I didn't see expensive strawberries, or expensive sushi, or anything else. Just melons. Why melons and not these? Or maybe they do exist and I just didn't find them.
As a way of buying gifts it almost backfires - I was sorely tempted to tell everyone "sorry, I was going to buy you all gifts from Japan, but instead I spent all my money on a melon".
It was very good ice-cream in the end. You're just not adventurous enough. I had black sesame ice-cream last december in Tokyo, and I think sweet potato ice-cream as well.
Still nothing beats my homemade strange ice-cream made by pouring balsamic vinegar over strawberry ice-cream. :)
Ghibli museum is the best. You should go there someday! :)
You'll love Japan, although it's not as cheap as eastern europe, obviously. What are your next year's travel plans? I thought you were into eclipse chasing nowadays (which I'm insanely envious of you for!). Or maybe you have been looking at this. Which I'll admit is a perfectly good reason to go to Japan in itself. I wonder how easy it is to get to those islands? :)
I have been to Tokyo, my brother was living there a couple of years ago but sadly I could only get a few days off work to see it - grrr. As for that eclipse, only the millionaires will get to see the full 6.39 minutes of it - those Japanese islands are tiny, and it will literally be a lottery who gets to go (so also hopeless if you want to go with someone!) It's a difficult one - I'm tempted by seeing it as a sunrise in India (although it will only be 3 mins), but it's monsoon season so clear skies are unlikely. The next one is equally remote, visible only from a very remote bit of Patagonia, so we'll have to wait a few years now. Sorry, I've gone into eclipse waffle mode...!
I wasn't sure if you'd been to Japan or not. One of the motivating factors behind this trip was having been briefly in Tokyo last December on my way to Austrilia for the new year, and just totally falling in love with the place. I knew I had to go back there, and for longer, and see more of Japan than Tokyo too. And now, of course, I love Japan even more so, and want to go back there for even longer. I can't win can I

Sounds like you had an amazing time. I love your photos - the one of the graveyard at night looks so spooky, and the bamboo forest reminds me of House of Flying Daggers (which is a film and does have ninja in it!)
You need to go to the Ghibli musuem (you could check the cat-bus for testicles too!)
I've seen that film, yes, and that must be the film I'm thinking of! :) The bamboo makes those wonderful creaking noises as the wind blows it and bends the bamboo.
