Those rabbits are FREAKING CREEPY. And that staircase is awesome, there are two things that I've always wanted in my house - a staircase that's as elaborate as that and a secret passageway. Both unlikely, but a gal can dream.
I am very jealous of your adventures. As I am when anyone writes on lj about foreign travel, but you sound like you had yourself a good time!
If I get a vote for where you go next, I'd say something exciting and challenging - and that would sound like Tanzania - but like everything in life it comes to your decision eventually!
I had to eat a whole 3 course meal while being fearful of those creepy rabbits above me! Meep!
If I ever designed a house, it would have a fantastic staircase, probably similar to that one in the bookstore *nods*. The photos don't do it justice, it's much much better seen in person. It did mean the shop was full of people admiring the staircase (I wasn't the only one) and ignoring all the wonderful books.
Secret passageways can be found in some houses in London. You just need to know where to look. squirmelia lived in a basement with a secret passageway last year. They really exist! :)
Are dreams those thoughts that we wish to make real, or those thoughts that cannot be made real?
I think anywhere I go I make it exciting and challenging - Tanzania is certainly tempting.
I would have spent the whole time going "don't look up and you'll forget they're there" and concentrating on my food!
I think I probably would've spend ten minutes staring at the stairs and then an hour marvelling at books. I guess I'm a serious book person at heart! Oh, I know secret passages exist, I just don't think that they'll ever exist in a house I live in - I'd have to move out of the suburbs!
Very deep, and I'd have to say dreams are a little bit of both.
The books were very pretty too, and I had a good book-explore, even though many of them were in Portuguese. They had many gorgeous old books there. Truly a wonder of the bookshop world, that place. :)
Portugal was awesome and much less scary than I thought it would be, and also much cheaper, and I'd certainly go there again sometime.
We'll see about California, although you're right that Iceland is more tempting. Part of me is thinking I should maybe go on a holiday with others sometime, and not just on my own, but I always like it on my own too.
That's most generous of you! :) If I did make it there, I may well accept that offer. The main thing keeping me away from Japan at the moment is the catastropic exchange rate of the yen, so am scared it would be hugely expensive there.
You're very right about the yen. When I came here it was 200 yen to the pound, now it's 150. I think it's slowly creeping back up, tho - it got down to about 125 a couple of months ago. Best not to go until the £ recovers a bit.
BTW, is the person in your icon you? I have often wondered, but always been to stupid to think to ask :)
*nods* It's awful, isn't it? (well, for me, I'm guessing if you get paid in yen it's good for you!). It was 220 to the pound when I first went to Tokyo, and 190 to the pound last year. And then ... splat. If it goes above 170 again, I'll be hopeful of things being affordable again.
Which icon? This one? It is me, yes, from quite some time ago now, dressed as a fairy in Whitby. I really need to update my icons, don't I?
*grins* Antarctica's on the long-term list (along with Greenland, Patagonia, Svalbard and places like that). My mum went to Antarctica and says it was amazing. But other places first, I think.
Belarus is not worth it from what I've heard - I used to know a few people from there and basically, if you've done Russia, you've done Belarus. North Korea could be interesting, although you'd be shunted around the whole time. I'd go to Iceland if I could.
My plan to jump around Europe this summer is merely embryonic at the moment, but if it develops, you are welcome to join me at any point convenient to you :)
Maybe not Belarus then, as they charge silly amounts for a visa as well. North Korea is almost more plausible. Possibly not right now, with the tense politics - wait for them to calm down a bit first.
Iceland is looking most likely, but if I go there I'd want to do it properly, and might not leave time to go anywhere else this summer.
Keep me informed of any plans you do form, just in case. Even if I can't join you for a week, I might be able to zoom out for a weekend somewhere.
