In Japan I will live in....Sakaide-shi in Kagawa. So it's in Shikoku where the weather in fabulously humid and the folks are largely not caucasian, unless by some ethnic miracle. My family features a grandfather, grandmother, housewife mother, teacher father and three teenage sisters 14, 15, and 17. I'm assuming that they live in some gigantic farm ( Read more... )

www.yfu-usa.org has scholarships that you can apply for, but you usually have to be in high school around junior-level for Asia scholarships, with two years of the country's language experience. The applications are due by January and require many short answer essay questions, as well as filling out a gigantic 30-page application, sending pictures and getting recommendations. If you get chosen for one of 100 spots you have to donate $500 to the organization before they confirm your scholarship, and entry fee to apply is $75. They want people with 3.0 or higher G.P.A's with foreign language experience for most scholarships and they usually call you back for an interview if they like your application. I applied and didn't think I'd get in, but I'm from Alaska and they hardly ever get people from here, so it's probably easier to apply from a state like mine where I only had to compete with 20 or so people for one of 100 spots. I applied for two scholarships, so it's always good to apply for at least that much if you don't get picked for ( ... )

Man, you are going to have a wicked awesome time. And even if it turns out that you have to live with three irritating teenage girls, you can always find male friends (or not-annoying girls) to spend time with. Have a blast!

The Shinkansen is pretty roomy, that is if you don't have someone sitting next to you. They have 2 seats on one side and 3 on the other...and they revolve around incase you want to talk to the people behind you. And maybe you should be worried about being able to lift your luggage onto the overhead shelf instead of it falling over onto people, I think Susan had trouble with that, and you're about the same height...

17 year old sister eh? You got a camera, right?
You know, for the sights...landscape and such....
