I understand how you feel, because Charlie was the reason I watched LOST and then he died and it lost all meaning to me. No, just kidding. Well not really because I was very upset by his death~
But seriously, I do understand how you feel. JD Salinger is my favorite author, he's the reason I decided to pursue writing as more than just a hobby. His death really upset me and no one understood why. I never met him, so why should I be so upset by his death? They don't understand that, like you said about McQueen, he inspired me and changed my life.
So don't let anyone make you feel bad about being upset by his death. Even if you never met him, he still means a lot to you. There's nothing wrong with that.

The fact that it's suicide is what makes it even more upsetting. I already don't like death as it is, but the fact that it could have been prevented really gets me. And he was so fucking young! Ugh. Just too fucking much to think about. People who know fashion really understand how devastating this is.

I understand what you're saying and I'm so sad for all of his family and close friends and also all those people he inspired. It always makes me upset when people like him and of course many others in different fields because I know that their work inspired and meant a lot to people. =[
