Danny was sitting by himself, waiting for news on Amy. He had a cold cup of coffee in his hands and his foot was tapping in an off beat rhythm that kept him from thinking about the same thing for too long. But the same thought kept slipping back into his head. He had fought with her. They were arguing this morning. Flack had thought they were being cute, walking into a crime scene close together when he had told them time and time again that he didn't feel comfortable with the two of them that close and not paying attention. No, not that case. Not that morning. That morning her mom called. And things always got tense between the two of them when she stuck her nose into their business. They'd been arguing in the car to the crime scene, they'd been arguing up to the scene, and they apparently weren't speaking to each other when they got to the crime scene. Then shots were fired and Danny didn't look back once when he went after the perp. He knew they had come close, but he hadn't thought one of them had been hit.
That she'd been hit.
He followed the guy up to the roof and he'd disappeared. Danny didn't feel like going back down, that's what was bothering him. He didn't feel like going to see if Flack or Amy were okay, so he just walked around the roof for awhile, trying to figure out a way his guy could have escaped. When he did eventually get back down to Flack and Amy, he saw her and... he couldn't breathe. She was just lying there, bleeding and he was being a fucking idiot and just stood there asking stupid questions.
Danny dropped his head against his forearms. He was doing it again. He was thinking. Thinking was bad and Danny had to keep reminding himself that it was bad. He ignored a pair of footsteps walking towards him. He'd given up on footsteps three hours ago and just waited for them to pass. When they didn't pass and instead stopped in front of him he got his hopes up just a little bit. Then one of the shoes started tapping and his hopes fell. They fell hard.
"And you're always here," Danny knew that voice. He hated that voice. That was the voice of the devil in half priced stiletto heels and lavender perfume, the kind he could smell an hour and a half after said devil had long gone. Danny didn't want to look up at Holly Fisher. He really didn't, but the woman stomped her foot just a little too hard and his head shot up. She didn't look distressed in the least bit. She wasn't going to be sympathetic towards him and he knew it. She had insults waiting behind her teeth to spit at him, she was just waiting for the right time.
"Ms. Fisher," said Danny grimly, dropping his head back down.
"Is it safe to assume you’re not happy to see me?"
"It’s fucking guaranteed," said Danny icily, looking up at her from under his eyebrows. "You have a purpose, or are you just here to annoy me?"
"I came to see Amy in the hospital," said Holly. "Just like you. Only difference is that I didn’t put her here-"
"I did not shoot Amy!" snapped Danny, standing up suddenly and getting in Holly’s face. She opened her mouth to shout something back at him when they were both interrupted by running footsteps. Holly broke his gaze first and looked over as one of Amy’s siblings charged at them.
"Ferris, slow down," said Holly, flinching as Amy’s younger brother skidded to a stop. He gave Danny a once over and gave him a nod.
"How you doin’ kid?" asked Danny, nodding back.
"Good," he said looking Danny up and down. "Are you the dirty-rotten cop who’s sleeping with my sister just to prove you can?"
Danny frowned and looked over at Holly who’s cheeks were flushing out of rage and embarrassment. Danny smirked and turned back to Ferris.
"Yeah, I guess I am."
"Cool," he said with a smirk. "Mom? Can me and Fay see Amy yet?"
"No. I’ll call you when you can, go back to the cafeteria and sit with your father-"
"Why can’t we wait up here?"
"We don’t know how long the surgery will take," said Danny, cutting Holly off. Ferris looked at him and nodded slowly.
"Promise you’ll get us when she’s out?" asked Ferris. Danny patted him on the shoulder and nodded.
"Absolutely."
"Absolutely not," said Holly shaking her head. "Who knows what kind of emotional damage it could cause them-"
"Now I know why Amy’s so wild, was she this sheltered as a child?" asked Danny, turning to Ferris who nodded.
"My daughter is not wild-"
"She is insane," hissed Danny, turning back to Holly.
"Mr. Messer?" Danny, Holly and Ferris looked over to see a doctor standing a few feet away. Danny took a step away from Holly and made his way over to the doctor.
"Yes?"
"I’m Doctor Combs, Amy’s doctor. She’s been stabilized, the bullet was removed and the only serious damage seems to be to her pelvis and uterus."
"Can I see her?"
"I’m sure that would be-"
"I’m her mother," interrupted Holly, folding her arms across her chest. Doctor Combs looked over at her, while Danny just tried not to roll his eyes. "If anyone is allowed to see her it should be me-"
"Danny Messer is the emergency contact listed," said Doctor Combs, handing to file to Holly. "It’s up to him-"
"That’s bullshit!"
"Can I see her?" asked Danny again. Doctor Combs nodded and stepped aside for Danny to get through.
Danny was thrilled by the situation. Amy would get a kick out of it, her mother being pissy about not getting to see her. It was surprisingly dark for all of the hospital rooms Danny had been in. Amy was lying on her back, the monitor beeping a him. It was comforting, knowing that she was alive, comforting to know that he wouldn’t have to say goodbye.
Danny sat down in one of the chairs next to Amy’s bed and leaned forward. One hand found it’s way into her’s on it’s own accord while his other hand brushed against her face gently. She didn’t react to him.
But he could wait.
