The snow had long since stopped falling and, in fact, the sun had even come out. Fay lifted his gaze from his footprints and watched as its beams illuminated each flake individually, setting the snowfield ablaze with light. This was "diamande," one of Seres' many words for snow. It was the kind that did not bring the danger of snow blindness but also wasn't growing soft and untraversable. Everything was dry and shining and gem-like. Just perfect.
And yet ...
Sakura-chan ...
There were only three sets of footprints along side him now. Fay couldn't help looking back at where the fourth set had ended. He could no longer see that point on the horizon of course, but that didn't stop him from missing her.
He pushed back his hood and glanced up at the sun. He hadn't seen one brighter since being in Clow Country. So, he thought, perhaps she had become their sun and watched over them like that now. The idea warmed him a little.
Suddenly, there were only two sets of footprints. He glanced around and realized that Syaoran was gone. There was no sign he had left the snowfield. His footprints had simply ceased. Then, to his great unease, there was only one set of footprints.
"Mokona?" he called, realizing that, being small and white, she might simply be hard to see against the snowfield. There was no answer.
His remaining companion was turning to face him just as he vanished. Fay found himself reaching out to empty, cold air, his mouth open in shock.
His were the only footprints now. He was alone again. He felt himself begin to tremble from the inside.
And then the sun went out.
