i've taken the bus to work and back home now for three days. it's given me a chance to take up reading some of the books that lirillith gave me ages ago that i haven't read yet

Oooh, careful: Pratchett has the ability to negate any savings you might have from not having a car ;)
I don't know about interesting conversations on a bus, but dragging a roll or two of carpet onto a bus can do wonders for silencing any conversation...
if my calculations are correct, i will need to purchase on the order of 1000 paperbacks per year to offset the "no car" savings.
this has largely to do with the fact that disney compensates me heavily for taking the bus (they sell monthly passes for $26, and they give me $1/day to ride the bus anyway), and the fact that insuring my car is ridiculously expensive, especially given my extreme misfortune while driving. behind the wheel of a car, i appear to relate heavily to rincewind...
