"For the last time, Sunny..." Sungmin hissed as he lowered his head, meeting Sunny's eyes sharply. "I am not gay."
Sunny responded by lifting one eyebrow, crossing her arms over her chest in an indignant fashion that left Sungmin befuddled, because seriously, if there was anyone who should cross his arms in an indignant fashion, it was Sungmin.
"But you are." Sunny said persistently. Sungmin rubbed his forehead, breathing in and out. "You act all manly like that, but really, the signs are blaring!"
"What," Sungmin fired, ducking as a middle-aged woman passed behind him. "What signs are you talking about? And-- and anyway, why are we talking about this here? In such a public place too, oh my god."
Sunny clucked her tongue irritably.
"See? You act like a diva. Gay. And you like pink so much. You're even wearing a pink shirt today, and okay, as much as it hurts to say it out loud, you do look good in pink..." she trailed off, but fired again as a new list of things set off in her head. "And there! See! Not all guys look good in pink, but you do, and at times even better than me! Do you know what that does to a girl? When we're out on dates, people look at you, not me."
Sungmin absorbed all of this, and came up with one conclusion: Sunny talked too fast.
"Could you repeat that last part one more time..." he began, but Sunny was already gritting her teeth.
"Why can't you just admit it?" she said loudly. They were starting to a get a few onlookers. Sungmin bit his lip and tried to shush his girlfriend. "No, Sungmin, I will not pipe down! Why can't you just admit that you're--"
"Sunny." Sungmin said exasperatedly. He lowered his head even more, their faces close to one another. "Could we please talk about this quietly and without attracting half of the city's population?"
But Sunny only hmp-ed and opened her mouth again.
"That's easy for you to say, because I never go and touch my friends inappropriately every chance I get!" she said this with effect; hand over her heart and everything.
Sungmin facepalmed.
"Sungmin, I'm not homophobic. I accept the fact that you like... cock. All I want now is for you to admit it not only to me, but to yourself." Sungmin was about to speak, but Sunny added an afterthought. "And so that we can officially break up and go find new significant others."
Sungmin thought back at the times he would absently stare at Siwon (a family friend who was very, very, very religious) and his abs, or at Ryeowook and his delectable (oh my god) lips. And he thought back at that time he and Yesung almost made out on Donghae's couch if not for Sunny calling him and asking him where he was.
Well, a chipper voice chimed in his mind, you're gay alright.
On the outside, Sungmin's face darkened.
"You just want to break up with me." Sungmin had to build up an act to salvage his pride. He had to. "Why? Is there someone else? Tell me who he is and I'll roundhouse kick his face off."
And that was when Sunny laughed. It was rich and melodious, like a bird chirping happily. Sungmin would've laughed along if the laughing matter wasn't himself.
"Oh Sungmin, if I told you I was cheating on you with Heechul, would you stop acting like a spoiled brat and tell me you're gay?" she said this with difficulty, seeing that she just couldn't stop laughing.
"Heechul? Wait, but Heechul's not interested in--" Sungmin groaned in pain as a hand swatted at his arm. "Hey, that hurt!"
"Ugh, you can be so stupid, Lee Sungmin." Sunny said, her face now void of any humor she had earlier. "I was only bluffing. It's not Heechul. And it's not anyone, for that matter. I'm seriously offended that you think I'd cheat on you... and yes, you can remedy that by saying three words."
"I love you?" Sungmin said hopefully. Sunny glowered. "Er... please marry me?"
Sunny swatted his arm again.
"Ow!" Sungmin rubbed his arm up and down, a sour look on his face. "Okay, okay! I know what I should say. 'I am gay'!"
"I knew it!" Sunny shouted happily. She did a little victory dance, and the onlookers exchanged weirded out looks.
"No! Wait, no, that's not what I meant!" Sungmin said, his face a mixture of horror and defeat as he watched Sunny dance in victory. "Goddamit, Sunny, I'm not gay!"
"Yes, you are." Sunny said in a singsong voice. "You just haven't fully accepted it."
Sungmin buried his face in his hands. This was not how he expected his afternoon stroll with Sunny to turn out into. This was, by far, the worst-case scenario he had experienced. People were looking at him, he was certain, with Sunny catching everyone's attention by the minute. His ears turned red as Sunny continued to poke fun at him.
"Oh, this makes me such an awful girlfriend." Sunny finally muttered. Sungmin raised his head and glared.
"You think?" he said bitterly. He was embarrassed beyond anything, and now he was obviously girlfriend-less. "I'm still not gay, you know."
Sunny clucked her tongue for the second time that day. She pulled out a small mirror from her purse and swiped a pinky over her lips, smearing her lipstick evenly. Then she returned it to her purse and smiled at Sungmin.
"You know, Sungmin, sometimes what we need--" Sunny shoved Sungmin back, hard. "--is a little push."
And that was how Sungmin found himself staring at the retreating figure of his ex-girlfriend, with his butt on the hard concrete floor. People whispered and pointed at him, but Sungmin was too shocked to care.
Sungmin didn't know how long he sat there, looking exactly how a guy would have if his girlfriend told him that he was gay and pushed him flat on his butt. In public.
"Hey, you should get up." a hand was held out in front of him, and Sungmin looked up to see a guy with kind eyes and a quirky smile. He felt his stomach flop. Butterflies fluttered.
"Um." Sungmin took the guy's hand, and the latter helped him up effortlessly. Sungmin was too attracted to let go of his hand.
"I think..." the guy finally disrupted his thoughts. "...that this is the part where you let go of my hand."
Sungmin came back to his senses, jumped back, and stared at the guy in front of him, wide-eyed.
"I--I'm sorry! It's just that-- I just..." Sungmin couldn't think straight, not when his hand still felt warm and the guy was starting to laugh at him. He clamped his mouth shut, cheeks flushing.
"I'm Cho Kyuhyun." the guy said after stifling his laughter. "I gotta say, you're a bit of an eye-catcher, even though it was mostly because you were sitting in the middle of the sidewalk."
Sungmin blushed, because did this guy-- Kyuhyun (he rolled the name around his tongue; it tasted perfect) just compliment him?
"I'm Lee Sungmin." he said, baffled at how high and tiny his voice came out. Kyuhyun smiled wider, and the butterflies in his stomach multiplied to ten.
Okay, maybe he was a little gay.
