She's comparing the familiar air to her mother's milk. It's intended to express her sense of being home.
p.s. It's a simile, rather than a metaphor.

Nope. It does say like in it, but the metaphor itself is comparing the action to that of a mother feeding a baby. So there.

I heard you rocked the drumming train! Congrats. My drum instructor brought his pipe snare to practice on Monday..I almost melted. One day.

well, knowing nothing about the play, i would say that Grace has returned to a home environment of some kind, and the aroma of the atmosphere is like the nurturing milk from a mother's breast.

In Sunday school when I was 4 I was the only kid who knew that trees didn't die in the winter, they were just sleeping :D.
