Micro-miniature art...

Just a short post...

Check out the work of Willard Wigan.

Most of his art fits in the eye of a needle, or on the head of a pin. He says that he does most of his work between heartbeats, as that is the time when his hand is the steadiest. Each of his pieces requires intense concentration to achieve.

Just thought y'all might find his stuff

In high school once, when we had a substitute teacher, we watched a 20 minute show about a guy who had chronic insomnia, so at night instead of sleeping he would paint the heads of pins under a microscope, elaborate landscapes and such. Very similar work, also rather bizarre.

Interesting to think of how artists play with size and scale. Comic artist Alison Bechdel (author/artist of "Dykes to Watch Out For") recently had a show displaying large scrolls on which she sketched characters. She writes that it was liberating to have such a large scale to work with rather than scrunching drawings into tight spaces, and that she drew one large scroll each day for the entire summer, then exhibited only the best ones. She also collaborated with another artist to make full-scale paper clothing -- shoes and shirts and whole outfits out of paper, which were painted and put on display.
