So, he did break his leg bone, up where the ball joint attaches to the rest of the femur. The surgery to fix that involves removing the ball at the break, and then the leg muscles compensate for the lack. Vet says that usually cats are putting weight back on the leg within days of the surgery. So right now it's just keep him home and give him pain ( Read more... )

Dumb question but have you tried Pill Pockets? They do work for short term pills. :)

Don't have any and forgot to get some from the vet--they had a stand right there at the reception desk. I tried turning one of the normal treats into a makeshift on, but the outer shell is too hard--it simply shattered.

Okay, I'm definitely stopping on the way home from work tomorrow and getting a package of those. I finally managed to get him to take the pill a few minutes ago by getting it to smell/taste enough like the treats I buy that he scarfed it down after having a treat. I'll worry more about him drinking/eating once that's kicked in and he can move with less pain. I haven't felt like eating all evening, and I'm not the one in pain!

oh no! poor baby! D: i'm glad the fix itself is relatively easy, but that is a terrible injury!

would you like me to set up a donation account to help defray the costs? giveforward.com does crowdfunding for pet health costs, as well as humans and i already have an account there.

It would be appreciated. I know if push came to shove I could pay for it entirely, but it would make things very tight. And I've already had one person insist on chipping in, and she wants to ask some of our mutual friends about it.

There is a lovely little device for that. A pill syringe like http://www.amazon.com/Ezy-Dose-Pet-Pill-Gun/dp/B0009YYNU0/ref=pd_sim_sbs_petsupplies_2 . You put the pill in the end, put it all the way back without risking fingers and down the throat it goes.

http://www.amazon.com/Greenies-Feline-Pockets-Chicken-1-6oz/dp/B001FSJCPK/ref=pd_sim_petsupplies_2 might be useful to.

Vet or local stores should have a syringe at least.

I don't think the syringe would work well... I couldn't get him to even open his mouth. But the treats... I meant to get some at the vet's. They had a stand of them and everything. I'll definitely be looking tomorrow for them, though!
