I think it should be noted that this issue surpasses just sexuality or discrimination. One of the things that the Los Altos community majority has been primarily concerned with over the past decade or so has been the maintenance of the city's character. If you really look at the social dynamic of Los Altos you'll notice that we (I use we despite yours and my, and come to think of it, nearly everyone else who reads this, expatriate status) have something truly unique; a real sense of community in an area of extreme urbanity. Think about it, when you were in high school, how many people would you find yourself waving to or stopping to talk with on any given saturday afternoon in downtown Los Altos? Where else in the world would you be able to find a place with such a high concentration of wealth, education and transience, (in terms of the number of people who move to Los Altos) in such an urban environmnet as the Bay Area, that retains such a small town familiarity and friendliness? This is what the city council so desperately
( ... )
hmm... that's certainly interesting to think about.
I never really thought about the sense of the Los Altos Community, even while I was there. And I suppose preserving that sense of community would be important to most of the people who live there, especially those who have lived there for a while.
That seems a rather selfish aim, though. And though I agree with the council's decision, it is certainly not for the purpose of preserving the sense of community in Los Altos...
Frankly I think Los Altos needs to get the fuck over that and stop letting it stand in the way of progress.

It's not discrimination. Eric's right that this is an issue of image, not sexuality or discrimination. There are many legitimate groups that have a right to exist in this country that the city council would have rejected. The gay equality issue will make progress in time, but not by antagonizing the very people you must eventually win over. Cultural change occurs successfully through finesse, not by force.

I'm so glad to see you're back on! I've missed your witicisms. And I'm glad you're taking a stance on this issue. I agree with you wholeheartedly! I don't think it has anything to do with discrimination. I think it would set a precedent that could have no limits. What a kid! I'm so proud of you! By the way, I hope the razor is for your face! I'd hate to think we taught you wrong!
