Do any of you lovelies do Web Design career wise? I've thrown the idea of going for a Media College Major around in my head for years, but after doing some freelance, I didn't like the idea of...well doing it freelance heh. I've also done some work for my boyfriends mothers book site years ago.. (so ignore the old layout, it's not nearly one of my ( Read more... )

Honestly if you want to freelance you don't have to take classes for it. Most freelancers I know are self-taught and have degrees in other things. I will soon have a four year degree in information technology (where my focus in corporate web design so they teach you php, javascript, database development, web design, flash, etc... basically anything cutting edge and "now") but if you want to just do design for smaller sites I don't think you'll need it.

If you wanna do it I'd just put up a portfolio and find prospective to make websites for an then add them to your portfolio. I really think you'd be wasting more money than gaining going to an art center for it (based on what I've seen at my college), but that's just my $0.02.

In Canada here, most of the graphic design/media design programs here teach web-designing in their curriculum, so I have my choose of what to get I suppose. Sheridan for instance, has a 1 year program and it focuses only on web design, for a certificate. Seneca has a few different programs where you learn other design work along with web stuff, which seems useful at proving you can be a "Jack-of-all-trades" to a company I suppose ( ... )

I did a summer turn as a web designer for a local university, but I've no more useful commentary than that (and also, that was back in '01.)

Thanks for this information, it was very helpful. I was hoping to get into something with an actual company, the idea of freelancing gives a bad taste in my mouth. I've done some in the past and it's pretty horrid. The only sort of positive time I had was working on my boyfriends mothers book site since I got creative leeway.

My boyfriend does contract jobs in his industry (animation, he's a layout artist atm.) so I guess I'm going to have to get used to dealing with those as well. (I will search high and low for a stable work place as I go, if I choose this career though. >I'm just trying to look at my hobbies and figure out if I want to make said hobbies into a career. I'm kind of confused on different career paths now. (I would love to get into illustration/something art based at Sheridan here, but they stack their deck with people who have previous schooling to make their reputation look spotless, also same boat as far as contracts and feelancing ( ... )
