This is a pretty long review, even for me, but then it's the last episode of volume 2. What can I say? I've got a lot of thoughts about this one.
This whole episode I was a nervous wreck. Worried from both the US and international previews about who would be the two to die. Even now, I'm kind of in a state of uncertainty, especially given last year's finale. I'm half expecting there to be a character dead at the beginning of volume 3 whom we thought made it out pretty okay (like with DL). It was another great episode though, and now I'm sad that we don't know for sure when the next new one will be. Oh well. On with my comments on this episode.
I'd been looking forward to Mohinder's coming home, his reunion with Sylar, and his getting to meet Maya, etc. I was not at all disappointed. How awesome was that? Mohinder was so confused by Maya's knowledge of Sylar's being a murderer, and her being one as well. Not to mention his being stunned that she called him Gabriel. One of my favorite parts of that scene was when Maya started using her power and Sylar was talking her out of it, telling her she didn't want to kill "the only person who can cure you" and "this darling little girl." Those descriptions made Mohinder and Molly seem like prizes on a game show or something, I dunno, that just amuses me.
Did Sylar even remember Molly as the Walker girl? Or maybe he never saw her when he killed her parents?
Also, do you guys agree that the "World's Greatest Dad" apron was Mohinder's? Since we know that Matt doesn't cook? That was adorable.
So, was Maya making
Chilaquiles then? Or did Sylar pick up that info when they were on their road trip? Interestingly, I'd seen Chilaquiles made on The Gourmet Next Door (Food Network) recently and the host noted that they're commonly used to treat hangovers. Hmm. What were Sylar and Maya up to while they waited for Mohinder to get back? And how long was that anyway?
As I've been a Sylar/Maya shipper since they met, I was thrilled that Sylar insisted upon Mohinder using Claire's blood to bring Maya back to life. Sure, Sylar was the one who shot her, but he wasn't going to let her stay dead - because he cares about her. I know some of you will probably say that he just wanted to see if the blood could heal anything, but why then didn't he kill more of them before he left? Yes, he's a villain, and yes he's done bad things, but we shouldn't forget that last season there was a time that he wanted to become a hero. He just wants to be special, to be cared about and not ignored or put down. He's complicated and messed up, but there is still good in him, which is what makes his character so compelling.
I really dislike having villains - or heroes for that matter - that are black or white as far as good/evil goes, and that's something that Heroes is very good at avoiding. The characters are flawed, they're complex, and you can usually see or guess at where they're coming from. What happened in their past that caused them to be this way. You can clearly see with Sylar the negative effects caused by Chandra's giving up on him so quickly, and his mother's negative treatment of him. Not to mention that the guy who had the telekinetic powers. I mean, if that guy hadn't said that he was broken and wanted fixing, I doubt that Gabriel would have figured out his intuitive aptitude could work with people's brains, or even if he'd have discovered he had a power at all.
It should be interesting to see what Sylar does in the next volume, and I highly doubt that he'll be heading a group of villains as was suggested by one of the people at TVGuide.com. Why would he even want to do that?
BTW, was I the only one who immediately thought of Popeye when Sylar used his telekinesis to move an empty spinach can? XD Where is he planning on going/living now? For that matter, where’s Maya going to go? My guess for her is that she’ll stay with M3, at least for a while. Then maybe, eventually, they’ll have every character whose name begins with an M staying there, lol.
I’ve become quite attached to Elle, and more so as we learn more about her past. She didn’t even shock Mr. Bennet to tell her more information about her past. I’m sensing that she might rebel against her father now that she knows more about what he did to her. She tries so hard to do things that would make him happy, but nothing seems to be good enough. Elle should spend more time with Mr. Bennet and Mohinder. She was so happy when Mohinder called her a hero *sigh*. Subsequently, I dislike Bob more and more.
What the hell is the deal he made with Mr. Bennet? Is it just that Mr. Bennet has to work for them and not go back to his family? At least Bob let Mr. Bennet go and see his family and tell them what’s going on though.
Mr. Bennet was so proud to hear that Claire was trying to take down The Company! I am glad that she didn’t go through with the plan to go public though, and I have to admit West was right to try to stop her. Also, I noticed that in this episode there was something about West’s mannerisms that reminded me of Mr. Bennet, making me think that in some subconscious way, Claire’s attracted to him because he’s like a merging of her two dads.
It’s been great these last few episodes, seeing Mrs. Bennet taking a bigger, more proactive role in things. I like her more because of this. But poor Lyle just gets left out all the time. Will he ever know what’s going on?
Things look bad for Niki. I knew she was going to be the one in that explosion. I feel awful for Micah, loosing both parents in the same year. I’m glad that he has Monica in his life. I hope that he and Monica don’t give up the crime fighting idea though. They make a good team and I think they could do a lot of good. Micah’s being able to use the cell phones as a tracking system was cool, and isn’t that a progression of his powers to be able to talk to machines that he isn’t touching? With the traffic lights, I mean.
Adam so was in love with Hiro. This hit me pretty strongly when Adam was all, “you were so much more than a friend,” to him. It surprised me that Adam 1.) Didn’t kill Hiro when he was unconscious on the ground. 2.) Seemed surprised to even see Hiro. Maybe he wasn’t sure what era Hiro was really from?
Loved the reunion of Hiro and Mr. Flying Man ^.^ not to mention Matt’s confusion about that.
It was relieving that Hiro didn’t die. I was actually pretty worried about that, and when Hiro returned to the office and Ando saw him from the back, I was scared that he’d been killed. So yeah, reliving.
Then the Nathan and Peter reunion almost made me cry. Good thing that Nathan was able to talk some sense into Peter. I wasn’t sure if Peter would get there in time to stop the vial from hitting the ground. But really, how did Peter know what to do with the virus?
I knew it wasn’t a good thing that Nathan did the introduction this time D: WTF is wrong with Angela?! She seemed like she was shaping up a bit, but I don’t know what to think about her! Why does she keep finding ways to get one or more of her sons killed? Is this going to be a new trend in the end of volume episodes?? I’m even wondering if she’ll be the leader of the group of villains that’s said to form next volume. Was Nathan’s assassin someone who she used her persuasive powers on to kill him, or someone who did that on their own accord? My first thought was what if Arthur Petrelli never really died and he’s the one Angela was on the phone with, the one who shot Nathan. Other top suspects include: a not actually dead Linderman, a double of Kaito (maybe he can make multiples of himself? Maybe that was his power? George Takei said we’d be hearing a lot more from him), Claude (he could’ve been invisible when he shot him), and the remaining unknown guy in the picture of The 12 (why didn’t Matt go find him?).
I’m hoping that Claire saw the assassination and will ask West to fly her there so she can give Nathan some of her blood. She knows that it works in bringing people back form the dead. Though I assume there are limits to how long after death the blood is effective, or maybe how badly the body is wounded? I want to know what these limits are. Perhaps Peter will try to use his blood to heal Nathan? I don’t think it would work though as I think it needs to be the blood of someone who has the altered regenerative DNA.
I feel like there are a lot of other things I wanted to mention or speculate about or whatever, but I’m blanking right now. I’ll post more later if I come up with anything else.
