Volume 4, Chapter 21 - “Into Asylum”
Loved this episode! Instead of my usual report in the order of how things happened during the show, I’m going to try organizing it by storyline, and then chronologically and see how that works.
The stuff with Claire and Nathan in Mexico so far has lived up to my expectations. When did Claire have time to get a haircut though? Anyway, at first when they were at the bar and Claire said that she sold her kidney(s?) - twice, I thought that maybe she was telling the truth as she probably could make a lot of money that way with her powers and all. But once she said that she sold the necklace her dad gave her, I realized she was joking about the first part. Oddly, at the bar, for a quick minute I thought that one of the guys in there was West, which would have been an interesting twist, but was not the case. Glad that Claire was able to out drink the other guys and win them the money in Nathan’s place. It was sad when Nathan was so drunk and talking to Claire about his regrets and his having wanted to win her over through giving her a free pass. And then sadder the next morning when Nathan says that there’s actually nothing he can do to make the situation better and he was just saying those things about how he was going to fix things, because he was so drunk. I think it’s really a good thing that the two of them are having this time together, despite the circumstances of running from Danko and company.
At first I was really confused about what Angela’s plan was about going to the church. Very interesting stuff in this storyline too. I actually felt bad for Angela, hearing about how she was just like Peter when she was younger, how she wanted to be a teacher, and then the dreams started happening and no one believed her when she was trying to warn them about things and trying to save the world. I believe what she said, and can kind of understand her a little better now. That must be so hard to have these pre-cog dreams and then want to change things, but just wind up having people think you’re crazy. It was also sad about how much she wanted to sleep, but couldn’t, and interesting that she said the pre-cog dreams will only come when she falls asleep naturally. It was funny how she wound up wearing clothes she donated to the church and how we found that out through Peter’s telling her that it looked like something she would wear. Poor Peter, confessing his anger and frustration with his family and with God. I was so glad that Mr. Bennet lied and told the guys from Danko’s team that the confessional booths were empty. Good Mr. Bennet. It’s weird how, in some way, this episode made me feel like maybe I like Angela a little bit? And then at the end there, I was glad that she had finally been able to sleep and have one of her dreams, but confused - her sister? This makes me wonder if 1. Her sister is that woman she went to have lunch with in the previous episode, Millie. Or 2. Gabriel/Sylar’s mother, thus making him still related to Angela, Peter, and Nathan (which it so seems like he is). While I do realize that she’s dead, the previews showed Angela holding what looked like a shovel, so, I don’t know if they’re going to dig her up or something. Either way, very interesting. And also, I’m glad that soon Angela, Peter, Nathan, and Claire will be reunited.
I love that Gabriel/Sylar seems to really like the radio. He had it on and was flipping stations when he was out on his first assignment with Mr. Bennet, and then again a few times in the truck with Luke, and now a couple more times in this episode. Loved his appearing and disappearing in the back of Danko’s car. Does this mean he can teleport now? Loved how he freaked Danko out by doing that - and that he got Danko to agree to the “one of us, one of them” plan. Weird how Danko referred to the taxidermy rabbit as a bunny. Not that calling a rabbit a bunny is weird, but it sounded strange coming from someone who’s supposedly so tough like Danko. Great detective skills on the part of Gabriel/Sylar. Liked his comments about being able to tell everything about a person from their belongings and noting that Danko has no collections of books, movies, cds, etc. etc. My brother totally called that the shapeshifter would have taken on Danko’s appearance at the club. However, neither of us predicted that the shapeshifter had morphed into Gabriel/Sylar. We both thought that he was the Danko and Gabriel/Sylar was still himself. How great was that though, having Gabriel/Sylar going to kill someone who had taken on his appearance? That must have been a lot of fun for Zachary Quinto to film. I really liked that Danko asked him to get the power another way, thus avoiding leaving his trademark. I assume that other way was through the empathy thing because I feel like Gabriel/Sylar could understand/feel for the guy’s desire for power and trying “to replace love with power” as Gabriel/Sylar said to Danko. That would also be a good thing in their continuing to track down people with powers because it wouldn’t lead a trail to Gabriel/Sylar, and it would allow him to continue using the empathy power and therefore make it so that that plot development wasn’t a waste. That was awesome when Mr. Bennet saw “Sylar” in the body bag. I wonder how much relief he felt, thinking that he’s dead, versus how much he was upset that it wasn’t him who killed him. Either way it works out really well for Gabriel/Sylar. The shapeshifting looks like it hurts a hell of a lot though.
