Here is my freakishly overdue report on Heroes Volume 4, Chapter 25. As usual, I'm putting it behind a cut.
Chapter 25 - An Invisible Thread
Gabriel/Sylar framing Danko was pretty cool.
I was glad to see that Angela and Claire were not in the car with Mr. Bennet when the Building 26 people pulled them over, but was surprised that Mr. Bennet actually did get captured. It was interesting, the conversation between Angela and Claire in which Angela told Claire something about never underestimating how far a parent will go to protect their children. I think through this volume I did come to understand that Angela really does care about her boys. I certainly have more sympathy towards her now.
It really seems like Gabriel/Sylar’s weak spot in his shapeshifting abilities is handwriting. First with having a totally wrong style signature when he was pretending to be Sandra, and then his signing using his left hand when pretending to be Nathan, when Nathan is right handed, thus causing Claire to become suspicious. He needs to work on being a little more careful with those details.
I don’t want Mr. Bennet teaming up with Danko, thus I was glad that HIro stopped time before they could shake on their deal. However, it is not cool that Hiro’s body is rejecting his power, as Mohinder said. I knew that a character was going to die in this episode, or at least I had read that, and I was really worried it was going to be Hiro.
That is just lame, the writers trying to set things up for Claire and Gabriel/Sylar to be shippy. I can’t see him having feelings for her. It’s just, really strange, and it seems like they’re trying to figure out another possibility so that if they decide to one day introduce baby Noah they can just claim that Claire is the mother, and not Elle. Clearly the mother of baby Noah was meant to be Elle. Little Noah looks like her and makes expressions like her, plus, it was so heavily hinted that she was the mother in other ways, and I read that when trying to negotiate with Kristen Bell about her schedule and so forth, Tim Kring apparently talked with her about a storyline involving pregnancy. If they’re trying to tell us now that Claire is the mother, that’s just stupid. Claire would never have allowed her son to be caught in the middle of a fight like poor Noah was, nor do I think she would have abandoned baby Noah to go fight with her rebel group. I mean, with Claire’s having been so hurt by her father leaving the family all the time to go and do things with the Company you would think she would be especially attuned to how that would make a child feel. Not to mention little Noah did not recognize her, thus if the writers want her to be the mother, they’re implying that she abandoned him when he was an infant and had no further contact with him, which seems so very OOC and stupid. Can’t they just work things out with Kristen Bell’s schedule and then use one of the many fan generated (or some other) theories for how to bring Elle back?
Nathan actually dying was sad. I felt especially bad for Angela. She really tried to follow through on her dream’s telling her that Matt would save Nathan, but it still didn’t work.
That was stupid of Gabriel/Sylar being so careless with who he was killing as they walked to the President’s limo. It just doesn’t seem like him when he’s killing people thoughtlessly like that.
I totally did not call Peter having shape shifted into the President in order to traquilize Gabriel/Sylar. That was awesome! Go Peter!
I can’t figure out my feelings on the putting all of Nathan’s memories into Gabriel/Sylar’s body and wiping his mind clean of his past. Why didn’t they just get Claire to donate some blood to sae her bio dad? She obviously would have! I mean, they had Nathan’s body right there and it was pretty much in tact besides the throat having been slit, but that would have healed up pretty fast once Claire’s blood got into his system. The only things that I can think of for why they decided to go with the have Gabriel/Sylar think that he’s Nathan plan is because it would be a way of stopping Sylar (presumably), and of course the writers might have thought this would be a more interesting storyline or something, which it may be. There certainly can be interesting things happening with this, but what will happen when Gabriel/Sylar eventually breaks free from the mind wipe (because he totally will)? I don’t want Nathan to go away completely. What did they do with his body anyway?
Also, if Matt’s mind wiping power has the potential to really stick, how come they never thought to try that with regard to removing all of Gabriel’s memories of being Sylar? I mean, it probably wouldn’t work with his having Claire’s powers, and we know that the brain can be healed through healing powers (as we saw with Linderman healing Angela’s brain and HIro’s mom healing HIro’s) and thus memories restored. But wouldn’t that have been something worth tying one of the times that the Company had him locked up? Or, you know, getting the Haitian to remove those memories? Although, with regard to the Company, they did seem more interested in seeing what he could do as Sylar than helping him to live a normal life as Gabriel.
The funeral pyre thing with “Sylar” was disturbing. I do think that Mr. Bennet heading a new Company will be an interesting twist for the next volume. And I’m cool with Angela working with him on that. I don’t like that we didn’t get any resolution on what’s causing Hiro to get so sick when he uses his powers. That worries me. I mean we saw him at the gathering at the end of volume 4, but still.
Beginning of Volume Five, “Redemption”
Wow, wasn’t surprised at all about Tracy still being alive. But I kinda don’t get why she has to be naked for her going and killing the various people involved with Building 26, other than an explanation of wanting to have more fan service.
I did love the bit with “Nathan” being completely distracted by that clock not running on time. It should be interesting to see these little bits character changes playing around during the next volume (as I’m assuming that that story will be resolved by the end of the volume).
I read that Nathan’s son Simon is going to be revealed to have a power sometime next volume, which I’m really looking forward to. I think that was in one of the CBR interviews with Joe Pokaski and Aron Coliete. Anyhow, I’m wondering if his power might somehow allow him to know that “Nathan” isn’t really Nathan.
