What I can gather after being a Lit major is that it means .... when you're in love, you cannot 'see' reality or practicality... and this is why the phrase shows up so much in literature. Shakespeare pointed out an important concept or occurrance about people in love. I.e. that those in love are willing to forego all common sense or sense of 'sight' (sight i.e. perception, clarity of thought) because they are figuratively 'blinded' by their love for someone. All reason goes out the door, and that is how the 'fatal flaw' as it were can lead to a protagonist's ultimate mistake (take Romeo for example). I could go on... but I think you get the idea! Helped? <3 u!
what morganlefay86 said... also has been used to mean that love stikes at random without rhyme or reason. two people dreadfully ill suited for one another might fall in love despite how badly they fit together (kind of the same thing, but a different perspective)
