I've tried various brands and flavors and its the most vile thing I've ever had. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

My hippie friends just love kombucha, but I haven't joined in the gushing words of praise. The stuff I had in the desert tasted like cider vinegar, not that cider vinegar is bad, but I just don't want to drink it straight.

Check out the scoby that ferments the tea:

My friends swear by it. I agree with you-it's putrid.

Yay for the bitter rant! As you described it, this "drink" sounded suspiciously like the rank and vile fermented mushroom juice that I once drank pre-coitally (still in the "Of course I can eat your macrobiotic food etc...." phase). Looked it up on the wiki and sure enough I came up with Russian "tea mushroom" ... that was it all right. Let's just say it was a memory to last a lifetime... as I recall it had an eau de sweaty fermented sock sort of top note that permeated the middle and bottom notes also. Bleargh. Let's just say that if it had been post-coital I would have declined this healing tisane after the first sip.
