It makes me wonder

I'm not sure whether I miss when I used to write more, or if I'm thankful I stopped (poetry, I mean, mostly).  I've been rereading a lot of what I wrote and it can really be haunting.  It preserves my past mindset and conditions with a clarity that can hurt but certainly keeps me honest.  It also forced me to really think about what I was going ( Read more... )

Do you see no longer writing as a conscious decision? I wonder because, after graduating Brandeis, much as I didn't especially want to, I've more or less stopped writing too. I miss writing, but I find it very difficult now to start something or complete something I've started.

Glad to hear other things are going well.

mostly a conscious decision. bursts of interest and disinterest as well. I've tried a few times or write a line or two that I think sound nice but just never muster the effort to create the necessary framework for them.

sorry I've been so bad at keeping in touch.

Interesting- I also used to (I think rather longer ago) write poetry, and have almost entirely stopped. For me, though, it was something that petered out over the time I was in college, mostly. Some of my old poems do bring back that strong sense of exactly what was going on at the time- rather like a dream journal, in that way. I think there's something very powerful to writing emotional things down: symbols can evoke so much when they're chosen selectively. I'd almost call it a sort of prayer focus, at times. At least it feels like one of those ways that I feed my spirituality and my connection with G-d at times when standing in prayer is not communicating in the right way.

Mazel tov on your new niece. What wonderful news that is.

I feel the same way about writing that you do, and have had much the same effect. Writing was always most specifically an outlet for me during bad times (much harder to write happy poetry), and I always assumed that when I lost most of my angst and ennui, I also lost most of my drive to write. Which is partly true, but lately I've been getting some of that angst and ennui back, and still no urge to write. It makes me feel old, somehow.
