Summary: The Shinee members get up early to prepare something special for Jinki’s birthday.
The dorm was a flurry of activity from early in the morning, hours before the sun even thought of rising, and way before the earliest bird that wanted to catch worms could even find the energy to bat an eyelid.
The alarm Taemin had set using his cell phone had gone off at an unearthly hour of 4am. The night before, he had promised himself that he would wake up no matter what, because there was an important event they all needed to prepare for. But when the time came, and the music was blasting from his phone, urging him to wake up, he hit the snooze button.
Or at least, he wanted to. But Minho, being the light sleeper that he was, had woken up immediately when he heard the first buzz of the cell phone. He sprung up from his bed and rushed over to Taemin’s side, hitting the magnae as hard as he could without hurting him.
“Wake up, you sleepy pig! It’s Jinki hyung’s birthday today, remember?” At the sound of those words, Taemin started rubbing his eyes, willing himself to wake up.
“Of course I remember. We’ve planned this day for months. But can’t I just have five more minutes in bed, I’m a growing child...” Taemin muttered before stuffing his face in his pillow.
Minho wasn’t one of many words, so he grabbed the pillow from under Taemin’s face, and wrestled a little with him until the younger boy was out of bed, and on the floor. That certainly woke him up.
The two of them then entered the room that Jonghyun, Key and Jinki shared. It would be difficult, waking the two others up without disturbing their leader. Jinki was the lightest sleeper out of all of them, and creeping past him to reach the rest presented them with a big challenge.
“Here’s the plan. I’ll go over and wake Jonghyun hyung and Key up, and you’ll stand guard at Jinki hyung’s bed. If he starts to stir, just plant a kiss on his forehead, okay?” Minho started to push Taemin towards his spot, but he resisted.
“You want me to kiss him? What for?” Taemin glared at Minho, wondering why he would ask him to do something as out of the blue as that. Kissing each other’s foreheads wasn’t something they did in the dorm (other parts, yes).
“He’s been missing his family lately, because it’s the Christmas season and he can’t spend it with them. He told me that he misses his mother’s goodnight kisses, so if you kiss his forehead when he’s still half asleep, he might think it’s a wonderful dream and drift back into la la land.” He paused. “Get the picture?”
Taemin let down his arms he had crossed in front of him, and complied with a defeated sigh. He positioned himself so that if Jinki made the slightest twitch, jolt or shudder, he would be the first one to see it. On the other side of the bedroom, Minho was creeping stealthily against the walls, reaching out to poke Jonghyun at the side.
“Hyung, wake up, it’s Jinki’s birthday!” Minho whispered. Jonghyun’s reaction was to use his arm to whack Minho’s face - which unfortunately was in the prime spot to get hit - and he wanted to yell at him to get out of his face. Minho slapped his hand over Jonghyun’s mouth before he could form the thought. “Hyung, just get out of the room first.”
Minho then moved over to Key, but it dawned quickly on him that he didn’t have to do anything. Key was already sitting up in his bed, staring at him knowingly. “Don’t bother, I’m already awake.” He smirked before putting on his bunny slippers and shuffling his way to the bathroom.
Minho signaled for everyone to get out of the room. But before Taemin left, he planted a gentle kiss on Jinki’s forehead, even though he hadn’t stirred once. “Just a little something to make him happy,” Taemin thought. He completely understood how depressed his hyung must have felt, not being able to spend more time with his family.

Almost an hour later, the four of them gathered in the tiny kitchen, laying out all the ingredients their manager had managed to sneak in for them the night before. They had various kinds of meat, vegetables, eggs as well as tofu in front of them. Most of them never spent much time in the kitchen, so they were at a loss as to how to start.
“We could just dump the tofu on a plate and put some meat around it. That would make Jinki hyung pretty happy,” Jonghyun suggested. He was exhausted and his brain wasn’t working well, and it obviously showed. Key flicked him on the shoulder.
“Don’t be silly, what kind of a breakfast is that? Taemin, help me check if there’s extra rice left in the fridge?” Turning to open the fridge door, Taemin was relieved when he saw they had a bowl of rice left over from yesterday’s lunch. Taking it out, he placed it on the kitchen counter.
“What are we supposed to do with rice and all this?” Minho wondered out loud. Did anyone ever cook tofu and rice together? Talk about bland.
“Guys, just look at what we have. The perfect ingredients for bibimbap! But instead of doing it the traditional way, we could add the meat we have, and crack an egg on top like they usually do. The tofu can be served as a side dish,” Key concluded. He folded his arms, proud of what he had just said.
Jonghyun gave him a slap on the back. “Looks like those cooking lessons you’ve had with Irang really did pay off!” Stretching his hands in front of him, and craning his neck from side to side, he said, “let’s get started.”

Time was ticking by fast, and they raced against the clock. Key umma (as they affectionately called him) divided everyone up to do different tasks. He had Taemin warm up the rice and prepare the vegetables, Jonghyun to grill the meat, and Minho to fry the egg. As for Key, he paid attention to tiny details, and started digging through the cupboards to find nice cutlery and bowls. He finely chopped some spring onions to place on top of the cold tofu, and drizzled some sauce on top to make the tofu taste less bland.
“Hyung, the rice isn’t warming up!” Taemin was puzzled. He’d put the rice inside the microwave, and set the time already, but nothing was happening. “Help me, hyung!”
Key rushed over and saw the problem straight away. Taemin didn’t plug the main switch into the power socket. Silly child!
Taemin grinned in embarrassment. “Whoops, didn’t see that there. Thanks hyung!” After checking another time that the microwave was working, he started to wash the vegetables.
Minho was having a little trouble cracking the eggs. He cracked the egg against the side of the stove a little too hard, and the yolk dripped all over his bare foot. His sense of competitiveness started to work its way in. He didn’t want to lose to eggs!
When Key saw what he was doing, he grabbed the egg out of Minho’s callused hand. “Watch it! You’re going to get more egg yolk on your foot.” He winced at the thought of having to clean up that sticky mess later.
“Here’s how you crack an egg.” Demonstrating it with the patience only a mother had, he showed Minho how to crack it against the side of a bowl with a little force. “There you go.” Minho smiled at him sheepishly, then went on to fry the egg, adding a little spring onion and bits of bacon inside to give the omelette extra flavor.
Key made his way over to where Jonghyun was. “How are you doing?” He wrapped his arms around Jonghyun’s impossible tiny waist, and started to rock, their bodies moving together. Jonghyun turned to give him a quick kiss on the cheek. “Fine. Grilling meat has always been my kind of thing. You don’t have to worry about me!”
--
Jinki woke up dazed and confused.
The moment he opened his eyes, he realized that Jonghyun and Key weren’t in their beds anymore. “Probably on a lover’s stroll,” he thought. He turned to his clock - it was 8 in the morning. He groaned.
He had promised himself he would wake up earlier everyday this week, so that he could squeeze in a quick jog at the neighborhood park before the rest were up. He had failed many times before, but expected himself to succeed this time. He sighed.
Making his way to the kitchen, planning to get himself some cereal for breakfast, he peeked into Minho’s and Taemin’s room. The two of them weren’t in there either! A though struck him - was there some schedule on right now that he had forgotten about? Didn’t anyone bother to wake him up and include him in their plans?
Didn’t anyone remember that today was his birthday?
Muttering under his breath at how badly his birthday was starting to turn out, he turned into the kitchen. No one was there either.
But on the dining table, right in front of him, was a big bowl of rice, and tofu as a side dish.
“Is this for me?” Jinki was surprised, wondering which of the PDs have bought him breakfast. Upon closer inspection, he realized it wasn’t the usual bibimbap that he and the members were given from the café downstairs.
The portion of rice given was generous, and there were five different kinds of vegetables inside the clay bowl. Someone had added beef and chicken in his bowl as well, and the egg that planted itself on top of everything was bright yellow, just the way he liked it.
Picking up the chopsticks that someone had conveniently left next to the dishes, he pinched a little egg off, and put it in his mouth, excited to get a taste. The egg melted in his mouth, and the salty flavor of the bacon complemented the taste of the spring onions. The delicious egg made him want to eat more, so he pulled out a chair and sat himself down to have a proper breakfast.
As he sat down, he noticed a little post-it that was in danger of flying off the counter. Picking it up, he read it in excitement.
“Jinki hyung! Happy birthday! Hope you liked the bibimbap that we made specially for you ☺ Enjoy your special day, and thank you for being the best leader we could ever have. Lots of love, us.”
He didn’t even have to think twice about who ‘us’ was.
The bright smile spreading across his face was confirmation enough.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEE JINKI! ☺ Thank you for being a continual source of hope and inspiration to me and the rest of the shawols. You are an amazing leader and without you, the band would never have gotten where it is today. You deserve all the love and support you receive. 사랑함니다 진기 오빠!
(p.s. I feel bad because I wrote this on a whim, and didn't put much thought or effort into writing it. Hope you liked reading it though!)
