Summary: Chanshik takes Jinyoung out to a bar to get them dates but Jinyoung has other ideas.
Jinyoung takes a sip from the straw in fruity concoction Chanshik called alcohol and tries his hardest to taste the alcohol beyond the sweetness, and fails. He eyes the crowd around him that is full of twenty-something’s mingling at tables like his own and drinking drinks even more ridiculous looking than his own.
“Chanshik, tell me again why I am here?” Jinyoung mutters between sips of his drink and gives Chanshik a narrow eyed glare.
Chanshik grins at him, “We’re gonna get you some ass! And me too” he adds in quickly with an eyebrow wiggle, “If that is okay, need me some good ass.” Chanshik laughs and shoots a wink at a passing girl to emphasize his point.
“I don’t want ass.” Jinyoung groans, “And this drink is an abomination and should hardly be called alcohol. Are you sure it isn’t just juice? I mean I’d understand if the bar tender thought you were underage…” he trails off when he realizes that Chanshik is more busy flirting with the girl he winked at than to him.
Jinyoung sighs and downs the rest of his fruit juice while trying to ignore the couple next to him. He turns his eyes instead to the karaoke stage on the far side of the bar from where he and Chanshik sat down. The music barely carries over the din of the crowd but Jinyoung can still hear how great of a singer the current person up is. The boy on the stage looks nervous but still sings with a passion that Jinyoung hasn’t seen in anyone since he quit his band a couple years ago. Nor has he seen any singers with that kind of raw talent in years.
“Chanshik….uh, I’m gonna go grab another drink, need anything?” Jinyoung stands up hastily and jabs Chanshik in the shoulder to get his attention. The younger looks up at him quickly and shakes his head no before going back to the girl.
Jinyoung stops by the bar and orders two beers, all the while keeping an eye on the stage. He makes it over to the side of the stage just as the boy, well, a man really but a very young man finishes his song and steps off stage with slightly shaky steps.
“Hey, you’re good!” Jinyoung says and holds out one of the beers towards the singer.
The boy grabs the beer with a hesitant smile, “Uh, thanks?”
Jinyoung puts what he assumes is a friendly smile on his face and extends a hand out, “I’m jinyoung.”
“Junghwan.” He says and grasps Jinyoung’s hand warmly. “Can we take this outside, I’m really hot.”
Jinyoung nods and follows Junghwan through the crowded room and out the front door into the cold winter night air. To his surprise there is snow covering everything in a fluffy white blanket and falling in slow lazy fashion that makes Jinyoung feel oddly calm.
“It’s snowing!” Junghwan shouts, and spreads his arms wide, spinning in circles. His face is upturned and mouth open with tongue lolling out to catch snowflakes. And Jinyoung thinks he may really like this kid, not even Chanshik had this kind of innocence.
Jinyoung laughs from his position under the eve of the store front, “You know those are full of pollution right?”
Junghwan stops mid-twirl, stumbling, slipping in the snow to land heavily on his backside. He stands up and gingerly rubs his rear while giving Jinyoung a cold stare, “Could have said something before I ate twenty of those things!”
“Sorry.” Jinyoung says and walks up to where the other man is standing in the street. He stoops down and picks up the beer bottle that somehow miraculously did not break on the street and hands it back to Junghwan.
They make their way across the road to a small park that is mostly empty but for a homeless man sheltering in the playground tunnel. Jinyoung leads Junghwan towards a set of picnic tables that are covered in a thick layer of snow. He uses his sleeve and brushes the snow off the chair and watches as Junghwan does the same. They sit down opposite one another and Jinyoung furiously thinks of things to say.
“So you like singing?” Jinyoung asks, and then mentally slaps himself for coming up with such a lame starter sentence.
“Love it!” Junghwan responds quickly, his face lighting up with excitement. “Do you?”
Jinyoung nods slowly, and fiddles with the cap on his beer wondering why the bar tender didn’t take the caps off. Junghwan grabs the beer out of his hand and gives a deft twist of the top, taking the lid off easily. Strike three for Jinyoung he thinks: first making him fall, second lame conversation, and third too dumb to figure out a beer has a twist off lid. Jinyoung sighs and says thank you before taking a long swallow of his drink.
“Why didn’t you sing in the club?” Junghwan asks.
Jinyoung sighs again and glances back across the street to the bar, “I don’t sing anymore.”
Junghwan looks at him, puzzled, “But you just said you liked singing!”
His pocket vibrates saving him from trying to answer Junghwan’s question. He pulls out his phone and sees a message from Chanshik:
From: Puppy-Chan
-Hyung! Where’d you go? I found two lovely ladies who want to hang out with us!
“Sorry.” Jinyoung says holding his phone up quickly towards Junghwan to indicate he was going to reply to the message. He rolls his eyes and taps out a quick reply:
From: Me
-I’m outside. Go on without me. Also I said didn’t want ass learn to listen!
Chanshik’s reply comes instantaneously, like he had just been sitting there staring at his phone:
From: Puppy-chan
-Hyung did you really ditch me!? Fine! More for ME!
Jinyoung looks up and realizes that Junghwan is leaning over the table peering down at his phone so he snatches it up out of sight. Junghwan laughs, “Puppy-chan? Sounds cute and he has women! How are you not high tailing it back inside?”
“I’m not rude for one.“ Jinyoung says. “And I said I’m not here for “some ass”
Junghwan nods, face brightening a little, “So about the singing thing….”
Jinyoung wants to say ‘if you kiss me I’ll sing for you’ but says instead, “Sing for me again and I’ll tell you.” He isn’t drunk enough yet for kissing.
Junghwan takes all of two seconds to begin singing. His voice breaking into the crisp night air so clearly that Jinyoung sits back stunned. It isn’t just how clear it is but how beautiful it is. His tone is perfect and his inflection is superb. And Jinyoung wishes that he met Junghwan three years ago so his band didn’t have to die.
Sure Jinyoung could sing alright. Even better than alright but not with the kind of perfection that Junghwan was displaying nor with the power that Junghwan had. Chanshik was Jinyoung’s only friend left from their high school band. Shinwoo and Sunwoo had left in anger after Jinyoung said he couldn’t be the main vocalist and guitarist and composer. Jinyoung sometimes wondered if maybe they had other reasons for leaving and just used him as an excuse. Shinwoo could sing really well but refused to saying he only played the bass. Chanshik could sing in the shower only, his nerves too bad to sing on stage, and no one ever wanted to hear Sunwoo sing (he was really kind of terrible). Chanshik had tried saving the band by saying he would get better at guitar and take the main guitarist parts from Jinyoung. Shinwoo had scoffed at Chanshik and Sunwoo had openly laughed, mocking Chanshik by saying they had only let him in the band so the group wasn’t visually impaired not because he had any musical talent.
Junghwan stops singing and thorws Jinyoung out of his thoughts. “Wow you’re so good.” Jinyoung says and takes another long swig from his beer, draining the bottle.
“I like singing, yes, but I like composing and playing the guitar more.” Jinyoung says, and stops realizing he is starting in the middle when he should start in the beginning since Junghwan knows nothing. But before he can continue Junghwan nods thoughtfully and stands up.
“Well, I have to go.” He says shoving his hands into his pockets, “Nice meeting you.”
Jinyoung is baffled as to why Junghwan is so suddenly leaving. Did he do something wrong? Was his response to the singing incorrect? Sometimes when he tried looking friendly, Jinyoung knew, he turned out a little creepy. It was his eyes. Junghwan has already turned his back and Jinyoung doesn’t know what to do so he sings. He could have just called out ‘wait! Don’t go!’ or let him go but he sings. Starts off quietly, just barely within hearing range but he sees Junghwan pause midstride. When Jinyoung raises his voice and sings out fully Junghwan turns around, a look of surprise on his face.
Jinyoung closes his eyes because he can feel his cheeks turning red. When he opens his eyes again Junghwan is back at the table sliding back into his chair. The song ends and Junghwan smiles widely and claps loudly, “You should sing more often Jinyoung!”
Jinyoung laughs his cheeks turning even redder than they already were, “I’m not nearly as good as you are.”
“But you’re good. Let’s sing together sometime.” Junghwan says and reaches out grabbing Jinyoung’s hand. His eyes drop to their entwined fingers resting in the cold snow atop the table and back up at Junghwan, no one is that friendly, right?
Jinyoung squeezes Junghwan’s hand, and smiles when Junghwan squeezes back, “Yeah, let’s.”
