I train because its a way of developing oneself to a better state both physically as well as mentally. As well as for the fact that it will aid me in any situation that might require me to protect my self and/or others from harm, however much i wish that any such situation not come to pass. And ultimately because i love to do it :)
Because it's facinating. There's so much to learn. It teaches me a lot about myself. I have a lot of respect for where it came from and I am glad to know that I will help pass it on. Knowing how to fight for myself is comforting as well.
For most of my life, I have been overweight and rather unhappy with my physical appearance and abilities, or lack thereof, rather. After losing almost 40 lbs. over the past year or so and changing my sedentary ways, I am finally in a place where I have become more comfortable with myself and what I can do with my body, and that's when I discovered the art of kali.
As an American-born and raised Pinay, I also know that I have so much to learn about my Pilipino heritage, and training in kali is one of my first steps toward understanding my own history and culture. And, of course, the best of part of my training is that every day that I train, I learn something new from my guros and fellow students, and that ongoing learning process keeps me coming back for more.
