Roy woke in darkness, trying to remember where he was. “Shhh,” someone said, patting his face awkwardly. Maes. He was at Maes and Gracia’s flat. Roy made to sit up, but Maes tugged him back down. “Nooo, Roy. Sleep.”

“I have to piss, Maes,” Roy protested.

Maes thumped his chest. “Don’t be crude in front of a lady,” he said sleepily, but he let Roy up.

Roy got up and did his business. By the time he came back, Maes had starfished over the entire bed, leaving Gracia peacefully asleep on one edge. Roy poked Maes in the forehead. “Maes,” he complained.

Maes flipped up, grabbing Roy’s arm and throwing him into the bed. Maes’ eyes were terrifying. “Maes,” Roy repeated, more insistently
