1. Your LiveJournal user name and what it means:
fmephisto - A simple username style conjunction of 'Fred' and 'Mephisto.' Although Fred Mephisto is not my legal name, it is a nickname that has been with me since my earliest days of computer based communication. It was not chosen based on any particular signifigance; I just liked the sound of it, and at age 11 or so that was all I really needed. Since then I have continued to use the pseudonym whenever some separation between my writings or activities and my "mundane" self seemed desireable.
2. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest) how well does your LiveJournal represent who you actually are?
6 - Most of my free-writing tends to sound more formal and serious than I generally am in person. In text I think I come off as quite aloof and distant, and although that is not entirely inaccurate I do feel as though I am more friendly in person.
3. How much about your life do you post to LJ?
Not a great deal. I admit I am more of a lurker. Most of the time I am not terribly inclined to just write up factual accounts of what I do or have done. Normally I only make entries that deal with ideas on a more abstract level than regualar day to day activity. I keep a daily hand-written journal of the mental and emotional states experienced through the day, but I have recently been considering trying to make a daily LJ post about things I do or that are done to me. We'll see how that goes.
4. Is there anything you refuse to post about?
I rarely post about sex or my romantic life, especially when I am in a serious relationship. I take this topic to be privelidged information between my partner and myself and not entertainment for the public. I also almost never post about politics or current events. Partly because these are not subjects of great import to me, and partly because my ideas on them are often so fluid or so unusual that I feel as though I would alienate my readers by doing so.
5. On a scale of 1-10 how interesting do you think your own journal is to others?
4. Would be interested to hear what you think on this point.
6. Has anyone ever joined LJ because of you?
I probably can't take full credit for anyone joining, but some people would probably say that I was a factor. They know who they are, no need to list them.
7. What proportion of your posts are friends only?
Nearly 0%. I have in the past made the comment that it would be more useful to have an option to block my friends from reading my posts than it is to block strangers.
8. What are your top five favorite interests on LJ?
Of my own? How about -
relentless self-inprovement,
apocalypse fetish,
solving problems,
open-handed magick, and
atlanta supremacist. I like all my interests though, which is sortof implied by them being interesting to me...
9. How often do you post in communities, and did you ever start your own?
Communities are one of my favorite parts of this site. I post in communities far more often than in my journal. I have not started any, but I have assumed control of the GSU and Mensa communities.
10. How often do you respond to/comment on other people's journals?
Again, more often than I post on my own. All told maybe 10 times a week or so.
.
11. Do you prefer to write in your journal or read other journals?
I read others' far more often. Usually a daily scan of my friends list.
12. Have you ever had something mean said to you or been stalked, harassed, or got into an argument on LJ (or did it to someone else)?
Not that I can recall. I don't tend to stay on a single topic long enough to engange in conflicts in groups, and with my friends I usually remain neutral in dramatic outbreaks. Actually I do recall some cattyness between my girlfriend at the time and another female friend taking place shortly after I started my journal, but it was quickly diffused.
13. Have you ever banned someone from your journal?
Nope. Again I tend to avoid inflammatory interpersonal sorts of topics so not much conflict going on around here.
14. Who are your four favorite LJ friend(s) and why?
Taking this to mean people who I know primarily through LJ:
5thovshrike - Shrike is just a good and respectable guy in my view. He exudes to me a feeling of camraderie and good times, and I find a similarity in our attempts to understand and exist within the universe both as gods and as wretched men. He is the sortof person who for whatever reason immediately triggered the 100% trustworthy response in my brain.
dankamongmen - Mentioned not at all as a result of his bringing this meme to my attention, nor because he mentioned me in his responses to same. Nick is a natural dynamo, and it takes about 3 seconds to realize this about him. Hardly ever does a post of his fail to A) make me laugh and B) reference something I am unfamiliar with, but find interesting enough to look up. The only time I remember actually meeting him, I was left thinking for days what a cool and generous person he was.
tiitta - Sexy Finnish corset maker. What else am I really looking for in random LJ friends?
15. Why are you most likely to add someone to your friends list?
Usually because they make some interesting comment or post in a group I am in. Sometimes I randomly add people with interesting interests to see what they have to say.
16. Do you automatically add friends to your journal if they add you first?
Not usually. I will read them over a bit and decide, often in favor, but I don't automatically add.
17. What is the most likely reason you wouldn't add someone to your friends list?
Low signal to noise. Some people just post too damn much about things I could care less about. Even if some of their posts I do find interesting, I will drop people for making me scroll through drivel.
18. Is your "significant other" on LJ?
Yep. This seems like a good reason to post a pic of us from DragonCon:
The lovely
anndr0id and myself as Aeon Flux and Trevor Goodchild from the TV show Aeon Flux (NOT the shitty looking upcoming movie).
19. Have you ever wanted to meet someone you know only from LJ?
Have actually met a number of people that way, including the above mentioned girlfriend.
