Thanks, now I have the 90s theme song stuck in my head. XD
Despite being a fan myself (if a very casual one), somehow this is news to me. But even more than that... people have OBJECTED to this??? WHAT? I... don't even.
I did notice the occasional parallel between gay rights and mutant rights, but lines like "...have you tried not being a mutant?" made it kind of obvious even for this oblivious lesbian!
I guess it's another kind of privilege, in a way, that I could read Warriors Don't Cry and be completely shocked and horrified at how very, very badly the Little Rock Nine were treated just for daring to go to school with white kids. I read it for the first time in years recently, right before bed... it took me a lot longer than usual to go to sleep that night.
As who's been a huge X-Men fan since the 80s, I should be more surprised that people who say they're Xmen fans didn't get the civil rights movement connection, but sadly I am not. Perhaps as a Native fangirl I notice these things more easily than the average white reader experiences allow them to. Donno. Hell, it was recognizing the comics connection to that time period, to that struggle, and to my own struggles for acceptance that made me such a huge fan girl of Xmen in the first place. Go figure.
I'm not an X-men fan, I enjoyed watching it as a kid, and I liked the movies and video games but I can't say I'm a fan. With that said, I knew there was some connection but I didn't know it ran that deep.
It's amazing how easily people wish to deny the truth about things and flip it. It's maddening.
