Am I not Allowed to Question the Legitimacy? A Rant on Race & Trek

Hello~ New member~!

I was directed here a while back by rubynye  when I posted about this very issue over at spock_uhura. I ended up getting swamped with school and didn't get the opportunity to really bring the discussion here, but nooooow I have some free time. Yay!

Well said! (And I happen to be Rubynye's roommate and we discuss fandom every morning on our drive to work, along with race issues as they apply, and gender issues as they reply... I love being her housemate.)

Thanks!

Oh wow, how cool! It's great to have that person to discuss these issues with. Sometimes its gets frustrating, because out in the fandom world, it always seems like I'm always fighting the fight alone.

It makes me question where I stand. Am I being "radical" and racist? Should I accept Roddenberry's supposed "vision"?

Yes. :) Thanks for posting.

I'm so hoping Uhura gets to keep rocking and doing more in this new reboot. A whole movie focusing on her would be grand. :)

Thanks :D! You're welcome!

It would be grand~ Or that the franchise takes a grander notice on her like they do with the trifecta :D Show us what has been denied to us for 40-odd years :)

See how I was treated in THIS gem of a discussion:

I read that entire conversation. Augh, that is the same crap I get whenever I talk race in Trek over at TrekBBS -- which is why I left. We are too loud, we're too angry, and we're looking at the problems with a modern mindset ( ... )

Excellent post, and all true. And sad, for me, that even her "upgraded" appearance in the reboot movie consisted mostly of snogging Spock; when her personal Moment of Awesome came (she's fluent in three Romulan dialects? AWESOME!), all she got to do was confirm it when Jim Fucking Kirk reported it!

Kirk: "Uhura found out this and this and this!"

Uhura: nods.

Grrr.

I look at Uhura's position in the movie not as a character that advanced the plot via action but as the emotional conscious for our main. She basically was the Bones to Spock's Kirk. So, I didn't mind that at all, I actually enjoyed watching her have that much of an impact on one of the main character and in return see a softer side to her that isn't "sassy black woman".

As for the sequel, I want to see her speaking Vulcan, Klingon, Romulan, Andorian, etc etc. I want her commanding her division and I want her to take control. The romance is over, now we need to see the reason why she's on board the Enterprise.
